Any ideas for figure backdrops ?

My efforts today

Using the backdrops from the site mentioned above, which are available free of charge, I created this Death Star section. If you put together the whole thing it creates the hanger area to fit a Millenium Falcon. I'm just doing a couple of sections like this.

So i used the backdrop stuck to 5mm black foam board. To stick I used PVA brushed on evenly. I have some LED strips that I want to create an ambient glow behind the scene so I've cut out some of the 'window' slots in the walls. That was damned hard by the way. I can get it looking tidier with a bit of black acrylic paint.

The floor is the foam board covered with sticky back plastic. Just needed to make sure there were no bubbles in it. Put together you get a cool reflection on the floor 8)

All in all i'm quite happy with this for a first effort. It's just cutting the slots out that was hard and very very fiddly. Need some small files to tidy it up.

Thanks I love the floor. That was the easiest bit to do. Going to make another wall section tomorrow and then slot it all into the display cabinet. To be honest it's a lot of detail that will hardly be seen, but the project is fun to do 8)

I'd been wondering about how to do a decent display for my loose collection - with the backdrops mentioned here, I reckon one choice scene from each film on 3 cabinet shelves should do the trick.

I would really recommend the use of black foam board. It's easy to get hold of on Ebay and makes a difference as the whole thing is rigid and can be taken out or moved about. For example, if you had a set of shelves you could make the section to fit inside the shelf recess. But you don't have to push it right to the back - you could bring the section forward to make a shallower recess. I would advise anyone thinking of making backdrops to check out the site above and look at the Death Star hanger build. It will give you some great ideas and it's all fairly easy to do


This tutorial is great. Top tip - you can ignore the use of hot glue and use PVA. Be careful what you use to glue foam as a lot of products will melt the board. Also be careful handling the printed sections as the print is easily marked. Use paper to handle them instead of holding the printed sections between your fingers.
