AFA Grading

My understanding was that foreign MOC's were graded less stringently than Kenner ones. Not sure on the logic behind that decision, but certainly my LL 80's are noticeably inferior to a lot of the Kenner 80's I used to have. Maybe that's just coincidence.

That DS Commander is mine. The card looks absolutely flawless in person. I had to sell it back in the spring, but when the new owner decided to grade and sell it on again a couple of months later, I had to get it back. Got very fortunate with someone willing to help me fund it and put it on a payment plan. There is no way in hell that should be an 80.

I caused quite a stir on RS because I held true to my ideals - and promptly busted that thing out of the case. I photographed it every step of the way, lol. Reactions were mostly horrified, to which I just laughed. Not about the 'value', or someone else's opinion of a grade to me.

Personally I don't see the point of grading any star wars items, I like to have the moc, box or loose figures in my hand and not with a case around it.

It is a beauty. I do like the GDE Cards. Any idea why it 'only' got an 80 for the card? It looks a very solid 85 in the picture.

Ian, did you link to the wrong thread as most reactions seem supportive?

Sell it to me Ian and I will get it graded again, I'll probably get it an 85.

LOL, I must have memory lapses. Most of the horror on RS was the act of de-casing, wasn't it? Waiting for an accident. The most negative reaction was on Facebook, but I can't link to that. :(

It isn't leaving my house again for the forseeable future, in any event. :)

Oh, both of those threads are awesome! I knew this place was going to be better than RS. No offence to the AFA fans that are here, but it's nice to be around a crowd that actually shares my opinion on this crud.

I reckon it's a pretty evan split on this forum between yes and no to AFA, the yes members just know to not go on about it to much and their not label collectors. :? :?:

Even that much is refreshing my friend. :)

Where I came from, there are people who must work for AFA considering the insane ass kissing they give the company.

I know not everyone is a "label collector". As with many things, it becomes a generalization thanks to those that obviously only care about the damn grade. I understand there's other reasons to be a fan of AFA, and I'm trying to make changes so I don't come across as strongly opinionated on the subject on this board. Believe me, what I say here is really toned down from my typical opinionated comments on it. :)

Cheers.

Never got AFA personally. ..and I will not use them
I love the idea of my more expensive pieces in acrylic cases they look cool and protected.

But I can get it out and play with it ( I also mean my figures too lol!!!)

Each to their own. .....grades meen nowt!!

Ian, I like your toned down response 8)

I'm also glad you recognise that not everyone who chooses to have their items authenticated/graded/cased up just do it to be a label Collector. While I choose to have items entombed and in some cases authenticated by Tom it's certainly not about the numbers. Grading is a mere side effect from having items shipped through CIB and then cased up at AFA. Over all I like uniform look the cases add AND the protection they provide for stuff like Proof cards and cherry MOC's apposed to those Top Loaders and **** looking Star Cases. I'm sure it's different for everyone.

Regarding voicing who likes and dislikes what. Years ago I used to get into pointless arguments that just went round and round as to why Id choose to have items cased up but over the years I found it was just wasted energy getting into it. There is far greater things going on in everyone's lives I'm sure than to worry about **** like this. 8)

Just my humble opinion.

That's the thing with grading for me I brought an R2 12 back in 2004 that was graded and I really liked how it displayed compared to all my other stuff in Star Cases. One thing for me was the fact the MOC could stand up on it's own straight. I don't remember seeing sliding bottom cases back then? Thing is with me the OCD takes over and they all have to be sealed now in the same type of case, it's sad I know, tried fighting it but their's no point.
I've got all types of grades including no grades.

The other thing is as well when I first met my wife she brought me MOC's for birthdays and Christmas, she found it helpfull buying graded stuff as she could be confident they were genuine. :)

Yeah guys, it's not the casing itself I don't care for. I don't own anything in acrylic, but will promote the cases Christian and Iain sell to anyone. They do look nice.

The negativity is directed at those who use grades as a point to brag about, or those who rely solely on AFA authentication rather than educate themselves on how to do it themselves. To me, that type of collector is either not a "true" collector, or is pretty lazy. Having said that, while it's not for me, I DO understand the assurance some get on a high end piece. No need to have AFA authenticate a Kenner Prune Face though. ;)

Cheers guys.

Ian

It's when people limelight an item with a blurry pick of the front of the moc and then a close up super sharp photo of an afa label that I question what they are collecting for.

Live and let live though and all that.

Apparently this is Greedo. And people trust this company to decide if things are fake or not...

Not just Greedo, but apparently this figure is on an ESB 45 back card from 1982 as well......

That's a clear mistake which AFA would put right if you gave them the chance, also it's not fake just got the wrong sticker on which would not bother me as I don't collect stickers. Anyway this thread as gone on far to long for me so I'm out. :)
