Hey all.

Turned the old PS3 on this morning and within 2 minutes it shut itself off and the red light started blinking at me. I've read online this is the Yellow light of death for PS3.

I have a few questions. I'm guessing all my game save data is lost??

How do I get the disk out??

Has anyone used the Sony Repair Programme where you send it away to Sony and they send you back either your unit refurbished or a refurbished slim PS3??

Or is it best to just buy a new one??

Gutted!! Love my PS3. :( :(

That's a bugger :!:

I don't have one but my brother in law did and had the same issue on a console that was about 18 months old
He looked into it and there are loads of web sites where you can send them off for repair, and there are DIY home brew fix kits where you solder and repair yourself.

It's like anything else though, even if the repair works, it's how long for and will it go again..
My BIL ended up buying a reconditioned one though

Gutted for you bud...good luck :D

I had this happen to mine a couple of years back. Had to chuck it in the bin and buy a new one. It's a bummer and Sony have a lot to answer for selling consoles that basically just shut down after a couple of years. It's not on.

Already been out and bought a new PS3 super slim 500gb with 2 games.

To be honest the price PS3's are at the moment due to the PS4 coming out I couldn't be arsed with sending mine of for a replacement.

Just gutted about loosing the saves. Can you back up your saves on your PSN network does anyone know??

Glad you've got sorted mate

This might help, network w ise and back up wise

Yea true, did think of that but would prob still have bought another PS3 anyway as you can't play ps3 games on the PS4.

I know Pete, they offer the repair programme but that's not the point, they nee to fix the problem in the first place.

"repair program"? Isn't that just them offering to fix it for a bunch of money?

Yea basically. You can either get your one back 'reconditioned' or opt for a new slim 'reconditioned unit. It does work out cheaper as I think they charge either £100 or £128, but your not getting a bran new unit in return, hence why I opted to go with a new one.

But isn't that roughly what a new one costs anyway? This is really a "service" is it. ebay provide the exact same "service" i hear.

Bit late to the party (or funeral?) on this one Chris...

If you can get your old PS3 up and running you should be able to do a data transfer to get your save files onto the new PS3.

Mumbo had YLOD on his PS and we fixed it a few times before it died completely (probably from my shoddy reassembly  )

We used the 'Heat Gun' technique as it fitted the diagnosis, shocked when it worked, we just followed an online tutorial and Bobs your uncle.

If you give it a go, you have nothing to loose.

I don't think my old PS3 will be up and running the sate it is in. I literally ripped it apart to get my GTA disk out. To be honest it was old and big and noisy, the new super slim one I now have is awesome, quiet, light and take's up less room. Not overly worried about the saves I had as luckily I had just completed the last game I was playing. Most other I had deleted or not playing anymore.

  Desperate times call for desperate measures

Glad you are sorted mate. Your new PS3 should keep you in order until Battlefront 3 comes out on the PS4 8)

Thats when I'm gonna upgrade...

Glad you got it sorted Chris. However, depending on what firmware you have on your old PS3, it might be a good idea to hold off putting it in the bin for now. Anything with a firmware no greater than 3.55 can be used for "backing up" (ahem) Super Audio CDs and are always sought after in the audio community.

And that is the only reason we've bought a PS4 - oh man I hope it's released soon :D :D :D
