AFA Degrading (pic heavy) - For scottie_boy

To be fair, Christian is spot on about the Zuckuss - the 60 probably counts against the card and it all seems to be down to the hanger tab

I have noticed that there seem to be a lot of lower grade MOCs out there and I honestly don't understand the point unless it is something so very rare that it needs authentication

Oh, and if you buy your own cases then you can take them out anytime you like - surely a much better option (and a lot safer to transport)

Fair grade on the zuckuss the tear above punch clearly draws the eye which detracts from the overall appearance of what is a nice MOC. Don't see see the point in breaking MOC's out of case. If you don't like AFA don't buy AFA. Nothing wrong with AFA IMO, I've brought a lot less crap since AFA have been around. :D

For me, simple. I got these for a good price. Moc's I wanted and needed. I collect vintage Star Wars not modern acrylic and labels. AFAs opinion is meaningless to me. I like to be able to touch and see my collection. I brought the moc's and not the grade, so I preferred them out.

With regards the zuckuss, why keep it in the case. AFA grades are good for one thing only. Resale value. Would you pay a premium for a 60. The answer is no, so why keep it trapped.

Different strokes for different folks.

Totally agree on the different strokes for different blokes, good saying that I have never heard before. :) A Luke poncho on POTF is easy to pick up ungraded so why pay a premium for graded. I assume you got it cheap :?: Touching the MOCs isn't something that I'm bothered about I look at them as a piece of art which is protected in a nice case I am a clumsy git as well so taking them out of the case is something that would create edge wear over the years. Also from a display point I think they look better if there all in identical cases, weather that is a normal sliding bottom case or an all singing and dancing AFA case.

Right on. I got the zuckuss for what I would expected to pay for an ungraded one. As Kevin Bacon said for 6 months solid every time I went to the cinema "it's a no brainer"

Jez was burning repro a couple of weeks ago. I might burn an AFA sticker and case.

Be careful- how will anyone know its a Zuckuss without the sticker

God dam it! different strokes for different pokes........whatever Ben said. :? :p

If that's what floats your boat then burn away, make sure your holding a MOC at the same time.

Go on eBay and look at the prices of BIN AFA figures for 2 minutes and tell me people who couldn't give a **** about vintage aren't taking liberties. It's an absolute piss take how the price of a card magically quadruples from its value before grading. It's really ****ing things up and is it's only going to get worse as more and more gets graded.

Some of my cards are really nice and other are a little rough around the edges but I love them all the same and I can upgrade when the opportunities arise. I don't want to pay a premium for an AFA sticker to tell me what's good and what's not.

Got my own criteria don't need theirs. And if I was to sell up it would be on here to reduce the chance of them being graded so some knob can turn a fast buck at another collectors expense.

Rant over :)

Well said Ben. I complete agree :)

I'd be a bit careful with removing the sticker as I think those ones are a little too well stuck on to come off easily (although I maybe thinking of Kay Bee ones?). I know we've been through sticker removal before but maybe a few tips again? Oh and I know there are a lot of people who like the history behind these price stickers but that giant orange one does look a bit of an eye sore. I personally don't like any type of sticker on the front of my reseals but so far I've managed to peal them off intact and restock them to the back corner of the card so as to not destroy the history of the prices these things went for back in the day (as well as toy stores).

Ian

Hi Ian,

I like your method of preserving the price stickers, however, I'm also in agreement - I don't like them. Also, you're correct - those Kay Bee stickers are an utter nightmare so much so I'll state now:

NEVER ATTEMPT TO REMOVE A KAY BEE STICKER FROM A MOC/CARDBACK - IT WILL NOT COME OFF CLEANLY - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

The large orange Toys-r-Us stickers are the easiest to remove cleanly. I'm sure that there are 'How to' posts re sticker removal here and if not then there are a ton on RS.

Cheers,
Christian

Thanks for the tip on my he Kay Bee stickers. I've a managed to lift a couple if TRU stickers with a hair dryer and lighter fluid. They came off well using this method and left very little residue.

I remember reading about the hair dryer method but couldn't get it to work. Does the sticker need to be lifted up a bit for this method to work (by blowing hot air underneath the lifted sticker bit)? I've tended to just take my time pealing them and then maybe use a bit of lighter fluid as I work my way along. I even did this on a Luke 12 back with a really horrible looking sticker on it. It was pretty hairy but came off well and I know the card back was later AFA graded and passed as an 80 with no problems.

Good to know that the TRU stickers come off easily and I only know the Kay Bee ones are impossible as it's the one sticker that ended up messing up a boxed Bespin Mico set I have. You live and learn

Very fun thread! It's nice to see those gems freed from their acrylic prisons!! You are brave, I thought about breaking free my ones with those horrible big grading labels but haven't for fear of accidentally damaging my moc's...

There's no need for any force, just run a stanley knife along the gap at the bottom and keep going all the way around the case and the bottom piece will just come away. :)

Received the Zuckuss today and I've immediately "de-graded" him this evening.

The Stanley knife wasn't much cop. Had a go with the scew driver which was better but sent bits pinging off round the kitchen.

So.... I took a hammer to it. Risky I know. Not for the faint hearted.

2 blows to the bottom of the case on the opposite side to the bubble, then a little more work with screwdriver and 30 second later he's out.

The TRU price stickers came straight off and a dab of lighter fulid on some cotton wool and all of the sticker residue was gone. Fixed the hanger and slide him into a GW acrylic case. Now it looks the business.

Absolutely, I got a really good deal for it. The AFA stickers that run along the top of the case look awful. It honestly does look so much better degraded, fits in with rest if my collection now.

I was easily able to fix the hanger, as I think Christian mentioned earlier in the thread. Why the AFA didn't do this before they entombed him is beyond me.

Price stickers don't bother generally but TRU stickers are easy targets. Not intending to sell him any time soon so for me, this was the right thing to do.
