No they can assess you and if you can't prove the profit you've declared they can establish one for you. Also if you pay in a large amount of cash the bank will go through the money laundering checks and again it could flag you to HMRC.

I'm not up with the latest on Tax but if memory serves (if its just the vintage Star Wars Toys) these are likely to be viewed as Non Wasting Chattels by HMRC so subject to the £6k limit, but be wary of the set rules as that would negate the £6k per item rule. Best to get some specialist advice...

Why is it on every single Facebook auction someone comes along and despite the bid increments being stated promptly doubles the auction price? Are there that many idiots out there willing to separated from their money so easily?

Its not just Gumtree that it happens on, I tried selling on Facebook and got lowballed to an almost comical level, a load of chancers offering 30% of the asking price. I lost patience put the lot on Ebay and even with an uplifted price to cover fees sold it for the asking price in 24 hours...

The notice states its only temporary so they will be back. Sadly the only way to make this trend go away is to not buy the game.
