Hi everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself to the community. I'm a UK-based collector, and I've recently reconnected with my vintage Star Wars toy collection while clearing my late parents' house.

Among the items is my original childhood Palitoy Death Star playset. I have vivid memories of playing with it going way back, and it meant and still means, a huge amount to me. The set is miraculously 100% complete and boxed with all its original cardboard and plastic components—the only single piece missing from putting it where it once was is the original instruction sheet.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling the manual was accidentally (and tragically) lost during the recent house clearance, and I am desperate to track an original replacement down to make my childhood set whole again.

I'd love to share some proper photos of the playset, but it is currently carefully disassembled and loosely wrapped in protective cotton layers awaiting our upcoming conservation day (or two, three etc) , so I'm leaving it tucked away safely for now!

I've joined the forum to connect with fellow Palitoy enthusiasts who might have a spare original sheet, or who can point me in the right direction. I have a decent budget ready for an original sheet in good condition to finish this deeply personal project.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

Thank you.
Iain

Welcome Iain,
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news…but…the instructions for the Death Star are often missing and hence command a hefty price if you can track a set down. Ones that I have seen sold, have all been just over the £100 mark and everyone was on Facebook.
They do come up now and again but are very few and far between I'm afraid.
Food luck with making your childhood set complete again.

Thanks Mini, really appreciate the advice!

Welcome Iain. Are you also planning to collect/ extend the childhood collection?

Nice Death Star. I have the plastic American one, but, not the Palitoy.

Thank you very much Beeper. So the current plan is to clean and complete (where needed) what I currently have. I keep seeing attractive sets that I really like the look of but I'm making myself resist. I've got the DS and the rest of my collection is vehicles, figures and SW/ESB comics. And the odd piece like a '78 Solo Blaster (you know, the hand toy) and Obi doll. In time I'll either expand or maybe adopt a one-in-one-out policy because of space at home. I'm never seen a US DS in person. How is it to own?

Hi Iain,

Welcome to the forum! I hope you stick around and enjoy it. We're a pretty friendly and helpful bunch, and there's also an awful lot of knowledge here if you have any questions.

Regarding your missing Palitoy Death Star instructions, as Mini99 suggested, finding some is possible but it may take some work and it's also not likely to be cheap, but seek and ye shall find as they say, so keep looking and I wish you the best of luck.

Jeremy, I certainly do plan to stick around, this isn't just about my DS tbh, I'm "back in". I'm finding the work and searching a big part of the fun so I'm up for it. Thank you very much for your kind words.

Is it a Perfect 10 or Darth's Dozen?
Phew, hope everyone is surviving this unbelievable UK heatwave today and melting into a really good weekend!
I wanted to ask a quick bit of Palitoy history trivia to the experts here. There seems to be a bit of a discussion about what constitutes a truly factory-complete clip set for the Palitoy Death Star . We know it takes 10 clips to lock the Death Star walls and floors together for assembly, but some folks swear the original 1978 box came packed with 12 clips in total—giving you 2 spares!
I'm too young to remember how many it came with when I first got it, so what is the general consensus on how many were originally packed, and what would be the correct number to have in the ultimate complete playset?

It's quite big put together so not on display. I currently have a few other items on display though. I have my childhood figures and ships (mostly ROTJ - I'm too young to remember Palitoy logos in real time), but, also collected as a teenager and young adult mostly focussing on loose complete and ships. Then life. Cars. Then came back to collecting a few years ago with a focus initially on loose figure variants and then on MOCs. I've stayed away from larger items for space reasons. Although, I do have a few on the wish list.

I believe it usually came with 12, but I also don't doubt there may have been some variance since it was packed by hand. And don't forget, some sets also came with the Palitoy booklet, but not all did. The one I had back in the 70s certainly didn't, yet many collectors today don't regard their version as complete unless they have one.

So 10 clips or 12, booklet or no booklet, your set may be complete already! :)

Thanks very much for these fascinating details. Yes, I'm siding towards 12 myself and I have 12. I've notice many out there display just the 10 but I'm obviously looking for a close to factory as I can. A booklet? Now you're breaking news to me...I obviously know about the instruction sheet. I wonder where I can see an image of the booklet? 🤔

Try here 🙂:

That's the old toy of the week thread. You can see my own Death Star and instruction leaflet there. I didn't have the booklet myself at the time, although I have picked one up since. Be very careful before you buy one however as there are a lot of reproductions out there most of which have 'Area 51' written in the small print on the reverse. Don't be paying real booklet prices for a crappy reproduction. Your bank balance won't thank you!

Hope that helps
