I have always thought silverfish was something you saw in the kitchen or the bathroom on the floor or in the sink and they did no harm.

I have no idea how this happen to me but I have an idea. I found silverfish in a closet in my bedroom on the top shelf between some comics and some star wars boxes. I think I must have had some comics or a star wars box out of that closet and before I placed it back in the closet one or more silverfish could have moved into the box or between the comics. I place them back in the closet and they get a family in the closet with kids

So far I have found 4 big silverfish and 11 very small baby silverfish between the comics and some star wars box.

They have been eathing some of my comics where there are holes in them now.

1. My Marvel ROTJ album damaged.
2. My Conan the destroyer album damaged.
3. My dark crystal album damaged.
4. My dune album damaged.
5. A marvel huge size star wars no. 1 album also damaged.

Now comes the worst some of the black in 2 corners on the front of my sandcrawler box have been damaged, so they also eat the black stuff on star wars boxes  couldtheynot have taken a cheaper box

2 european speeder bike instruction damaged with a lot of holes in them

All papers in the boxes will now from the future be sealed in plastic bags. After that I will seal each box in a plastic bag.

Many of my comics are in plastic bags and cardboards behind them. But I have first a few weeks ago found the correct size for the albums and uk marvel comics. So this comics was not in bags yet.

I tried to read about it on the internet and they write they love eating paper.

I just want to warn you guys if you do not know this, protect your stuff before this also happen to you.

Sorry to hear that Lars, I never knew they ate Star Wars. I've used cedar oil to get them out of the basement. There's a guide Here to help you get them under control.

Oh no i'm sorry to hear that Lars you must be so p*ssed off 😕😭

The only positive thing is that you have found them now before they destroyed everything you had in there and can now tackle the problem and get rid of them.👍

None of my comics are in plastic wallets although i only have around 30, they are a complete set but im struggling to find something that fits as they are an odd shape.

You've made me want to go check my stuff in the studio now, nothing in there is protected apart from the boxes i put them in.

All my mocs are in acrylic cases and they're in the house.

Horrid little buggers.

I've read that silverfish (the ones you see in bathrooms) are a different species from the ones that eat paper (paperfish). Nothing that helps you unfortunately, Lars. My commiserations.

Hi Lars,

I'm really sorry to hear this. Absolutely terrible! I hope you've at least found them in time to do something about it to stop them damaging anything else.

Jeremy

Mortified for you Lars, i sure hope batman's link gives you some good advice on how to quash the problem & get you back to where you want to be with things, just a damn shame it's cost you dearly already buddy, must admit I have seen a couple in the house & worried about the paper eating issues though I did not know they were 2 different species Emiel, good tip!

Yes I am pissed off, I think your items in acrylic cases are protected. I am beginning to think I need to buy acrylic cases in the future for my stuff but I guess they are expensive.

Only most of my comics are in comics bags.

just a warning, they can hide behind the flaps in the boxes so you need to check the boxes very well.

I did not know they were diffrent. I only knew about 2 species silverfish and some bigger and darker one that eats cases. I think they are called Long Tailed Siverfish and they come from norway. I got some of them last year but I think killed them all also with poison and they did not do any damaged to my stuff, I found them in one of my old amiga 500 cases.

In the news they have said the last couple of years open all your packets outside your home and throw the cases out and then take your stuff inside your home. I have done that since last year.

Well I guess this will cost me this week checking all my stuff and packing them in bags so I will not be so much on the forum this week.

The damaged does also cost, but I hope to find 2 new euro speederbike instructions and replace the comics. So far I will not buy a better sandcrawler box and sell the damaged one.

Gutted for you @Pomse2001 :( and I know how time-consuming it will be to unpack and check everything and try and protect them for the future.

Is it the UK Marvel Comics that are damaged? If so I have got a few if you want to let me know which ones

Not much compensation I know but at least you discovered it now and not 6 months down the line

Regards

thanks I will look at it. I have now given poisen all over the apartment and the places where I have found them. I so far found them 2 places in my bedroom and in my kitchen.

I have learned that plastic bags do not keep them out. They can bite holes in them to get inside the bag. I took some comics where there was silverfish in them and put them in bags so I later could check the comics for bugs and kill them. When I got the time to check them the bags had small holes in them so they had escaped the bags

I have also read that flower Lavandula does not make silverfish happy, they do not like the smell of it, so I will try to see if I find a few in the garden shop today for my apartment to see if it works :) So far I have found 20 silverfish and yesterday was the first day for me where I have not found any silverfish. I am now nearly done in the bedroom. I only need to check one closet more. Then I will begin cleaning everything in the kithen and check all closet there.

I have also bought some big plastic boxes for some of my items. I will buy some more today to protect my things. The strange thing is I have a bookcase in my bedroom and there are no bugs in any of this books. Why the **** to they want my star wars in big closed closets more

Thanks mate.

Oh yes it has now taken me nearly 1 week to check and clean every thing in my bedroom and now I only need to check and clean one closet more. Then I will begin in the kitchen so I think I will first be done with it all in the end of next week. I also need to check the other rooms.

I have not had time to check my uk marvel comics yet. I have checked all my danish star wars comics, us old and new marvel comics and all my dark horse comics and all of this was sealed in comics bags. But I now know they can bite holes in plastic bags so I guess they can also bite holes in comic bags  I think I have to buy some plastic boxes for all my comics to protect them.

I will check my uk marvel comics today. I will let you know if they have been attacked and damaged. I hope not they have been attacked.

Thanks for trying to help (y)

Hi Lars,

I believe silverfish prefer the dark, and come out more at night. Your bookcase is probably not as desirable to them since presumably it's effectively in daylight for half of the day. Whereas a closed cupboard or closet gives them darkness all day long :(

Jeremy

Hello Lars

Sorry to hear this

I had silver fish in my kitchen and bathroom, still have some, they seem to like damp / dark areas, had less since I fixed some water / damp issues so the areas are dryer, I keep comics in the flat plastic storage containers hopefully they cannot bite through them, don't want to lose any of my beloved childhood 2000ad comics

Have you any slight damp issues in that cupboard bad ventilation ?

thanks for the info, I think you are correct about that (y)

any pictures of your plastic storage containers, I think it is hard to find some in the correct size unless I want to pay crazy money. Normally I use comic cases but I need to replace them now to plastic. I have seen they sell them now in plastic on ebay but they are to long for me and all to expensive.

A little update, I am now done in my bedroom with cleaning and checking my items so far no more damage. I began sunday in the kitchen and also in the living room. I have also bought a lot of plastic boxes and thrown out a lot of shoeboxes and other boxes. I think the kitchen and the living room will take all of this week so I will not be much on the forum this week. I have 2 kinds of silverfish the big dark one and the small silverfish. I had not seen any for 3 days until this morning I had one on the kitchen floor, 1 silverfish that was no. 21 since I found them.

I have washed all floors in Lavandula cleaning products and all of my bedroom, I have read they hate the smell of that. I have also put a little cup in each closet with Lavandula smell, I hope that will keep them out of my closets  I am not 100% sure if it works since there was one on the floor today

Have you checked under the kitchen cabinets? Depending which type of units you have most of the fitted kitchens in the UK you're able to take the bottom plinth/panel off to give you access under the units. Might be worth a look with a torch if you're able to do that.👍
