Email Preferences Query

I am hoping someone can help me please. I love this forum and have no intention of leaving it, however I am trying to get used to the new look version. Sadly, I am finding the new one less clear and user-friendly than its more streamlined and simpler predecessor, but hopefully that will improve with time and use. However, I am rather confused by the Preferences settings. On the old forum, I had set my preferences to receive an email notification if someone sent me a PM or quoted me in a thread reply. However, when the forum migrated to the new look one, out of the blue I suddenly received what was essentially a junk email from 'Star Wars Forum <[email protected]>', entitled 'Your favourite underrated figure?' and containing 'Highlighted Posts' from a slew of threads, some of which I had read and some of which I had not.

In light of this unwanted email, I examined my Preferences on the new forum, however the closest match I could find was the 'Receive news and update emails' option, which was ticked (as was 'Receive email when a new conversation message is received'). I therefore unticked this option and did not receive any further unwanted emails. So far so good... However, today I posted in the 'What figure completed your loose run.' thread, and Nick (Mini99) quoted me in a reply, however I did not receive an email notification advising me of that fact. I have very reluctantly therefore re-ticked the 'Receive news and update emails' option once again in the hopes that I will also once again receive notifications when someone replies to or quotes a post by me in their reply.

Please can someone explain whether there is a way to just receive the same notifications I used to get on the old forum (i.e. PM's and quotes/replies to my posts), without receiving other unwanted 'News' emails?

Many thanks.

I'm sorry you consider the weekly newsletter junk, I don't feel that is it, but that's alright.
Inside of that email you should have the option to unsubscribe, and you'll never receive that email.

You should make sure the option "Automatically watch content you interact with…" and email is selected.

Aye, I had/have similar issues. I got the weekly newsletter email as well, but I just unsubscribed. I'm normally on here enough that I see most posts anyway.

As far as the new fonts/layout etc go, I am REALLY REALLY struggling. I can't tell what threads have new posts and when I click on a thread I can't see where the new posts are without skimming through each and every one until I find one I don't remember reading. It could just be me, but it's all but impossible to use. I really CBA reading 7 posts on every thread just to find the new posts. Surely we could have something similar to the old idiot proof system!?

Thank you both for your replies. I will follow your advice to unsubscribe from the newsletter. To be fair, I visit the forum every day without fail and hence usually manage to check out all the threads I wish to see, and hence it is for that reason that the newsletter is, for me, not needed. I apologise if my use of the word 'junk' to describe it was unkind / unfair. What I meant was that because I don't personally need it (owing to my tendency to read those threads that interest me regularly anyway), then for me personally I class it as an unwanted email. I meant no offence, so please accept my apologies if any was taken.

As for Weasel's comments, I'm sorry to say that I have to agree with them. That is exactly what I meant when I described it (for me) as being less clear and user-friendly than its predecessor. If there could be more differentiation between the fonts / colours used for threads which have unread posts in them that would be really helpful. And likewise, if some method of more easily finding new posts within threads could be found, that too would be great.

Otherwise, this forum remains a wonderful place. I recommend it to others and enjoy it immensely, so thank you for continuing to run and maintain it. Hopefully my own slight struggles with the new look will ease over time as I get more used to it, but if more user-friendly ways of displaying / finding new / unread posts could also be found, that can only be a good thing.

I've added an indicator for any post that you have not read will be labels "new"
Example:
Screen Shot 2021-07-20 at 8.36.42 AM.png
Screen Shot 2021-07-20 at 8.39.43 AM.png

The first arrow you can tell the font is bold and the flag "new" appears next to it. The second arrow indicates there are no new posts as the font is not bold, and the indicator is not present. I'm demonstrating on both the dark and light styles.

I will continue to see if I can make further changes to differentiate the two.

When you click the link it should take you to the post you have not read - this uses cookies from your machine. So please be sure you have cookies enabled on your device.

This link should take you to unread threads:

the first time you click on a thread it does default to the start of the thread, presumably as is the first time it is being read on the new platform.
if you scroll to the end of the first page you can skip to the last page and work it out from there. The thread will then drop off the list obtained by clicking on the link above until a new reply is posted, at which point you get taken to the latest page.

Not as clean as it was previously but hopefully that's of some use to you.

Each new post also has this indicator - I'm thinking this could be tweaked to offer some contrast.

Yeah I'm the same , bit of a stick in the mud when it comes to change, I'm finding it really difficult to adjust to the new format. was going to put up a latest acquisition, after 10 mins gave up as I couldn't find where to post. The previous format was so much easier to use, not just through being used to the old format, it was much clearer and simpler to use but again that's probably as I'm an old git!
I will persevere but I find I love to log in on a daily basis, but have limited time so don't have time to search and try and find things now. And I've lost my Saber ha ha !!

Hi Mike,
I follow you, but change can be good…😏
I use the "New Posts" button just below the blue Forums button.
Then you will see all the new posts since you last logged in (assuming you are logged in of course).🙄
I hope that helps.

The LA thread is sticked in the main Vintage Collecting Chat sub forum, same place it's always been:

Thanks to everyone adjusting to the new format, unfortunately nothing on the web stays the same forever, at least we don't change as often as Facebook :)
