Really pissed off after my pc crashed after a Windows 10 upgrade

Rang Microsoft and the only option is to pay someone to recover my data and then reinstall Windows 7!

Time to go to Apple

What happened? I agree Windows is **** but I use it every day at work so might be able to help.

You can try running data recovery software. If you remove your HDD plug it into a caddy and into another computer then run the data recovery Software. Have used Recuva free to download is pretty good. Or can you do a system restore to before you installed windows 10? If so do the system restore once thats done. Run CCleaner and a full disk check and repair (type CMD in search, right click and select Run as Administrator and type in the command chkdsk c: /f /r ask to reboot select yes will take a while but will fix and recover any damaged areas for the OS.

A friend at work reckons he can backup the hard drive and then ill reboot with Windows 7 - hopefully will be ok

Essentially the computer no longer boots up and just has an error message. Microsoft said its a common issue with the latest update but as I only have a back up of 7 its essentially out of their hands

Wish I'd never gone for the free upgrade, been nothing but niggly issues and now this

Thanks for the advice anyway

Edit - system restore won't work as F8 can't get through the error message

No problem mate, good luck. Do you have a Windows 7 disk to boot from? If so boot from that and select repair my computer.

I do - and tried that earlier today. Didn't work as the system was now 10.

I'll have to reboot the whole thing, but at least I'll know it's rid of thre dreaded 10 :)

Fair enough, yer agree not keen on Windows. Use windows at work and work in the IT section but am a Mac user and my best mate is an IOS Developer at Sky won't touch windows he hates it with a passion.

Love my iPhone and I'm very tempted to go the whole hog

To be fair my works computer is Windows and I rarely have issues there but that is still Windows 7

Do prefer Windows 7 out of the other Windows OS windows 8 and 8.1 without classic shell is a real pain to use.

I havnt upgraded any of our workstations to windows 10, no need to at all, its run on the same core at 7 anyway, just with the stupid tablet style interface.

by rule of thumb i would never upgrade on OS on top of another, i would always do a clean install, with windows 10 upgrade you should have a rollback option anyway.

Your data wont be lost, easily retrievable by either plugging the HDD into another system to read the files or using a boot cd coupled with an external hard drive to copy them off.

usually use hirens boot cd or choose one from here

apple is a different kettle of fish in pc terms, highly incompatible with day to day items like usb pens and hard drives ect.

and to be honest windows/7/8 are extremely stable operating systems, the windows 8 issues are ironed out with classic shell menu replacement.

With Apple to work with USB pens and and External HDD they need to formatted as FAT32 rather then NTFS.

Agree with Upgrading would do it from a clean install not an update i'm sticking with windows 7 on my Windows machine works well. But looks like the guy can't use the roll back as its can't get to the boot up. Has an error message.

exactly - cant do anything

Cheers Andy - the boot cd looks a good option but I'll leave it to my mate as I'm not the greatest with technology

A limited file system cant remember the file size limits on maybe 4gb, if apple were not so anal and proprietary they would take the business markets, i cant stand apple products, im not a big microsoft fan either but the improvements to windows have been great, no more BSOD, built in encryption for external devices, full compatibility with android drag and drop (not like shitty itunes)

with regards to his issues, there is a windows recovery boot CD for the rollback if his file system is intact, or just boot with one of the winpe cd's i linked to, copy your files off and do a fresh install on 7 and then image it with acronis/aomei/macrium reflect ect so you never get stuck again :)

:) honestly mate download hirens boot cd and choose mini xp, you can then browse your hard drive and copy it all off :)

but if your mate is doing it for free (or a pint) then no big deal

To be fair the issue you are referring to is entirely in Microsofts hands - OS X has its own file system, just like Windows does. OS X can read NTFS, but Windows cannot read the OS X file system without special software. The old FAT you refer to is the only one both can read out of the box, but like you say is limited to 4GB file sizes. So both formats are guitly of having their own file system, but OS X can read all of the Windows ones without additional software. Windows cannot.

Just an opinion here from your average joe computer user. I went from Windows to a Mac 7 or so years ago. Never looked back. Wouldn't entertain having a Windows of now and I use them at work all the time.

might give it a go anyway - I've got an external hard drive will I need a laptop or once the boot cd is running will I have access to my PC?

i think its just horses for courses really, anything you pick up in the high street works on windows, any hardware, software, full domain functionality with complete granular control over users, apple doesnt offer this kind of scope as far as i know but i plainly refuse to pay their premiums for similar systems, i purchased a 3D Revit machine from dell for just under £900, the same spec system for a mac that couldnt integrate into our domain was triple the price and for what?

its nice stuff but its got nothing over windows, or windows based hardware manufacturers, i love our synology servers, based on linux they are superb bits of kit so im not focused on microsoft, i think they twat around a lot for no reason, but since windows 7 ive had little or no issues at all, my helpdesk requests have dropped by about 80% too :)
