Does anyone know what the duty/tax threshold is for sending stuff through US customs? I know its a hell of a lot more than our £18/£36 gift but does anyone know the exact amount?

I didn't realise they had to pay import fees? I have sent items to the US before and had to fill in the customs paperwork but I thought that was more for insurance purposes? :?
