I'll sum up my thoughts then on star wars addiction- if you got bills to pay and kids to feed and you can't afford them because of all the toys you need to buy or you don't have a partner because you spend too much time on here - GET THE **** OFF THE FORUM

A shame it's gone. I was really enjoying this as it had quite a lot of good insights. I was reading this on my mobile phone BTW and I suddenly got a timeout and the thread was gone. I was afraid I had deleted it accidentally. :? But luckily it was you Andy you bastard.

well, sorry guys, i just didnt want to open a can of worms with my opinion.

For those of you who are wondering, im simply stated the the addiction to collecting is linked with forums, seeing other collections and competing and getting involved.

As i have moved away from forums i dont spend 80% of the money i was.

I think I was the first to reply on this, then you deleted it before I got to read any of the other replies!
Someone tell me what happened?

Plantman is right in a way, there is an element of collectors collecting to show other collectors.
There is the personal connection of getting the toys and the hunt which is what I find addictive.

But when I think of the folks who have seen my collection only one guy was interested the rest who grew up with star wars just went mnehh or thought I was nuts.
So if I was honest the only folk who appreciate my efforts are me and the folks on here.!

But is that my only drive for collecting,, ? No my main drive is the search for the next piece and the fun of opening the package when it arrives. After that it fades.
There is a part of me that convinces myself that there is an element of investing involved but after adding up what I spent and the small amount of sales I have had I am down overall about 15% but I am not in it to make money.
But I am not in it to waste money , so I have learnt to buy carefully .

I agree Steve, with 99% of things I try to get them for the best price possible...and pass if I dont get them. I only have paid over the odds for one item so far, and that is something that I have never seen before and will be the best part of my focus. (Its only a few days away from coming and I cant wait!!)

I adore the chase and scoring a bargain. My collection as it is at the mo isnt displayed to its fullest so I cant enjoy it as much as I could. That is changing this summer though!!!

Completely agree, that's the most fun bit. Any fool can put together a loose or MOC collection over night by paying book price in Ebay stores. I enjoy the trading. The big money buyers on RS that boast about paying 10k for a MOC don't interest me, it's obviously chump change to them. I get much more enjoyment looking at a modest collection of somebody who has worked hard for it.

Completely agree with all of you.

I have really enjoyed the chase over the last couple of years. I have not done any sums but am pretty sure that with a bit of canny buying and selling I have managed to put together a pretty decent collection and am not really out of pocket.

I speak as someone who had a pretty serious gambling addiction and I can see elements of this in what I am doing - however in this case I do have something to show for it at the end !

Its not a bad thing in any way, i totally enjoy doing what i do, and im a well known flipper of toys, ive made some nice profits and got some nice bargains over the years.

I would never have been able to afford my collection without chasing stuff down and having a finger in a few pies (dont say it weaz)

All ive noticed is, you get your head stuck in the addiction of star wars and it flys by, i ended up with tons of stuff, yes i loved having it and seeing it again, it brought back memories. But like Ron said, i had lots of money sat in toys and just taking a step back allowed me to tame it a bit.

But thats just my story, doesnt have to be everyones, all im saying is i linked it to the social aspect of forums.

As well as genuinely loving the toys, I actually consider it to be a form of savings and investment. I'm useless with cash, I just fritter it away until it's gone. If I buy a couple of MOCs a month, I don't really notice the money going, but after a year could have a collection with a couple of grand perhaps. It was great selling up last time, I was able to buy a nice car. There's no way I could have saved up 7 grand in cash, I don't have the will power!

So that's kind of why I've started collecting again - I like the toys and enjoy the hunt, and as a bonus I have a nice little investment building up. I don't expect it to grow in value, it may even drop, but they will never be worthless.

Great discussion chaps.

I remember starting off around 4 years ago building my loose collection.

I loved the hunt and the constant searching on ebay and the feeling when the collection was complete was fantastic.
I also loved showing the guys on here my collection as it grew (oh err missus...don't want any one to change one word in that sentenance. I'll be watching!)

I remember being at Collectormania a few years back and paying £40 for a Last 17 R2 and my brother saying I was mad and me thinking that was a lot of money, which it was.
But then it started spiralling into bigger and more expensive purchases and new focuses which opened up new ways to collect. ie getting contacts on RS and other forums
for specialised areas like Ledy and Bootlegs. It meant I was widening my friend base on the forums, but also meant I was becoming more addicted to the forums and the constant chase.

It got to the point that items would come up for sale and I wouldn't think twice about buying it and not thinking of the consequences. Some of these were big purchases. A bloody stupid and dangerous way to collect, and yes it became an obssesion and an addiction.

That is why this year has been a lot different for me and I decided to sell off a large part of the more expensive side of the collection. I had a reality check when I realised I couldn't pay an unexpected tax bill and my Credit Card needed to go.

I still have 80% of my collection, just not so much of the higher end stuff. I'm having a break from buying (apart from a small purchase yesterday  ) and when I do start buying again I'm gonna go for more affordable stuff that won't break the bank.

Breaking the bank..

exactly. i had hoovered up so many ships and a full loose (except last 15) when i realised i would never be able to display them, and i had paid wayy too much for some, especially with irish postage.

So i focused , and on a cheap satifying area i was interested in, and in some ways the thing that broughtme here over a year ago. AN imperial army.

and today just when thoughts of f**k it buy a newer bike its sunny out there a package arrived with beaters from liverpool rob and a tasty stormie regiment from the U.S. and agin i was Stoked.

out with the baby wipes and stands and time to add them to my collection.
