I love Star Wars and football, have done since I can remember. I often wander if I had to choose which one I would go for. I think I would choose Star Wars because football is so stressful. Family and friends always say do you remember when so and so happened and I can usually tell them the year because their was a big football match at the time. This makes me think I would probably be better of without football, as it obviously takes a lot of pointless memory up.

With all the highs and lows with football, Star Wars is more reliable apart from buying the odd fake VC Jawa I've enjoyed everything Star Wars, yes even the prequels.

But then again with football you never really no what might happen, although this is becoming less so. I really don't no, if you had to give one up totally, what would you choose?

Funny you should start this thread- one of the kids in my class asked me this same question a couple of weeks ago! My answer... Star Wars 8) So many amazing, nostalgic memories + I'm really enjoying the new stuff. I also hate the way football has gone in the Sky era and it just seems to be getting worse each season :(

You'd think a teacher would read the question properly
Which would you give up completely....

I can't decide, thought I would give up football but starting this thread has made me think. It's a bit like choosing between Frosties and Coco Pops.

Don't get me wrong, I love Spurs, even if they don't always seem to love me ;-). However, my heart belongs to Star Wars, so that wins every single time. It doesn't just win out over football, but beats most other things for me as well. It's been a near-constant companion throughout my life, so giving it up would be like losing a very close friend.

For me, that's like saying do you prefer your brother or sister. Both have been with me as long as I can remember. Both have played huge roles in my childhood and both will stay with me till the day I die.

Football for me.

I pretty much know the OT off by heart, probably not far off being able to recite them. The Prequels are abominations and the new two new films (or three if you wanna count Rouge one) just don't do much for me. Everyone knows my opinion on the latest POS, but the other two are fine. I've just never really felt the need to rewatch them like I would ocassionally for other films. They definitely aren't even in the same league as the OT but history and nostalgia probably play a part in that.

Football on the other hand changes every season, every week even, and I'm one of those footy fans who can watch a game between 2 decent sides and enjoy it. It doesn't have to be 'my' team. So footy wins hands down for me.

Ps, isn't it strange that a Utd fan posts this thread whilst Utd go through their worst patch in the last 25 years  (sorry, cudnt resist lol)

If I had to choose I would struggle on that one

Worse patch for 25 years, but we can always smile. ( sorry I couldn't resist)

Yeah we are going through a bad patch by our own standards, English football would be pretty boring if Fergie was still in charge, Leicester would never have won the league and all the pundits would be banging on about Fergie time. I'm not not even going their with Liverpool, a succesful season for them now is a top 4 spot. When did that become acceptable for a club that has won 5 European Cups and 18 league titles?

I accept Man Utd are going through a bad patch, the club will always be judged on how well we do in the league and rightly so, with the resources the club has it's been a joke at times. Still if 3 trophies in the last 2 seasons is a rough patch I'll take that, fergies last 4 seasons he won 2 league titles and a league cup.

Is that a big enough bight for you Weasle?

I remember in my school in the 90's if someone said they supported Man U they'd get slated as a glory hunter, that went on for like 5 years

Ahhh two bites! 8)

I knew you Utd fans wouldn't let me down.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think the last title Fergy won (in his last season) was probably his biggest domestic achievement. That Utd team was probably one of the weakest teams ever to win a PL title. That is judged against other title winners. Now you can take that as a Liverpool fan slagging off Utd, or you can take it as a football fan pointing out that if that was one of the weakest ever PL winners, WTF does that say about those sides who finished below them?

I also think Fergy left at a very good time. City now have the bottomless pit of money that Chelsea have, probably more so, and Utd don't have the funds that they did. Entirely cos the Glazers bought Utd using money secured against Utd's assets and Utd get to pay for the privilege of being owned by them. That is money that could/would/should other wise be spent on the club/stadium and or most importantly players. That has undoubtedly hindered Utd.

As for Utd's trophy count over the last few years. My opinion on trophies, and this is regardless of if Pool win them or someone else does. Charity shield is a farce (ditto European Super cup) and anyone who counts that as a trophy is pathetic. Carling cup is nice to win but really just a waste of time. FAC has tradition but sadly is becoming less and less meaningful every year. PL is the PL and is obviously a great achievement. EL 'was' a waste of time, but now it has a CL spot it has become worth winning, but only for the CL spot. CL, for me is still the pinnacle of European club football and biggest prize.
Sadly a lot of the loss of prestige for FAC and EL is ENTIRELY due to the money that has flooded in to football and the CL in particular. It's sad, but a top four finish now will do more a clubs chances of signing a big name player and its future prospects than saying you won the FAC/EL (pre it getting a CL spot) and the worthless cup. For that reason I do actually think a top four finish is worth more to a club than the other trophies. That's not me trying to defend Pool, cos they won FA recently, that's just where football is atm, and I think it's sad, but such is life.

Absolutely correct when you say the top 4 is the most important thing financially for the elite clubs. But I'm a fan at the end of the day and although the game is all about money for the players, owners, directors and anyone else who thrives from football financially. It's not for me. Man Utd and Liverpool have enough resources to compete with any club in England and Europe, so if you can win a trophie here and their, that's what it's all about for me.

No Man Utd or Liverpool fan goes on about how they remember that season that we finished 3rd and qualified for the CL. But you can remember when Gerrard banged in a last minute equaliser against West Ham in the FA Cup final and whent on to win on penalties. That's what football is about great moments and the only moment I can remember when Man Utd clinched a CL spot, was the Europa League last season and part of me thought its bollocks this the only reason the players have won this is for CL football.

I'm never going to be sold on the top 4 thing over a trophie as a fan it's worthless to me, I would rather see Man Utd win the Europa League final than loose the CL final. How often do you see an ex pundit on TV and it comes up on the screen 'Joe Bloggs finished in the top 4, 5 times in his carrier'? Oh and he won the League Cup in 1998.
