Hi there,

I have found a Poster from the film "A New Hope" in my great uncles house. He was stunt Co-Ordinator and a few characters in the original films, Peter Diamond, and his sons at the time stood in for the Ewoks and Jawa's.

The Poster appears to be real with the research I have done, not a reproduction with the "hairs" on Leia and R2D2.

Along the bottom it has: Distributed by "Portal Publications."

I have no idea of its worth, so any help I would be so grateful!

Thanks

Andrew

I would think, and I wouldn't really know how to do this, but you would need to get this verified.

There are so many fakes of this poster that I cannot see anyone paying what this would be worth if it were an original. I know that the tell tale signs have a lot to do with the touch and feel of the paper and even then that isn't a guarantee.

Best of luck and I really hope that it is an original

HI there,

thanks for the info so far!

I also have some signed photographs but they are personalised so wouldn't be wanting to sell them. One shot is him in the famous attack on Luke Skywalker, kind of like this but obviously a much higher quality and res:

And also one of him on the bikes (Return of Jedi) going through the forrest, along with a signed CV with all of his work on.

Any ideas on those?

Hey
Do you have the dimensions? One of the ways to tell is the wid and height back int the 70's the standard would be 27" x 41" for a one sheet, which is what you have. If that matches up that would be a good thing, although mowing if it is UK or US would have a bearing as well. The US only got 500 of these Tom Chantrell posters but it was the standard UK poster.
If the dimensions match up I might also be interested in the poster.

Yeah the dimensions are fairly crucial for an item like this and i would advise including them in the ebay listing. This could be 1inch by 3inches for we know.

Well after a little research I am not convinced this is the real deal.

I am aware that the internet is not the all-knowing being it wants us to believe it is so this may not be the case but rather than look at the poster (which in all likelihood is from the 70's) I looked into the publication company.

"In the 1960's and 1970's several companies, the most prominent being Portal Publications, reproduced a number of vintage movie posters. Several aspects of these posters make it easy to identify them as reproductions. First, their size — 24" x 36" — a size not produced by any movie studio for display in theaters. The standard "one sheet" size movie poster was always 27" x 41". Second, at the bottom of the poster was clearly printed "copyright Portal Publications". It had the original release date of the film, but it still is not an original. These posters were printed on a flat stock, which does make them appear in this day and age — "old", but they are not original and are virtually worthless." (from movieposters.ha)

Portal did operate with a licence from Lucus Arts so their products were not knockoffs or anything, rather they were not studio issues posters, so therefore not original. Without more info, better pictures etc. my guess is this is a 1970's reproduction.

There are a few sites that are quite reputable with collectors that talk of this:

Cheers for the help guys!

I think its a selling poster, not a theatrical one now. Im pretty sure it'll be about 24" by 36"

Bit of a shame like! But still from my great uncles house.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi there. Post a picture of your poster in a separate thread.
