Not sure if this is the correct place to post this - so apologies in advance.

In the past I have made the odd mistake when selling on ebay. I have always gave a full refund plus postage costs

I returned an item (not star wars) to a seller as it was not as described  - they have refunded (although its pending till 5th July???) WTF!!

Also no original postege costs returned never mind my costs in returning the item (nearly £6) I'm £12 down due to a crappy ebayer.

Whats your thoughts on this, and what is good practice when returning an item to an ebay seller

Cheers

The original postage costs should be refunded without a doubt! Probably the cost to post it back too. Not enough information given. Depends if it is 'not as described' or 'not quite as described'. In otherwords objective v subjective. IMO.

IMO Buyer pays for return postage. Seller refunds initial payment ( inc. initial postage ) unless the buyer just 'changed their mind' Seller pays for both lots of postage if it is their mistake ( wrong item.... )

Cheers chaps - yep thats what I have done in the past, I have sent an email stating these points - is there anything that can be done if the seller refuses?

ebay dont make these things easy - do they

Yes, exactly. As scandalous as it is you have to pay to return items that are missold, damaged or faulty. Through no fault of your own you're out of pocket. I got stung badly about a year ago because it was a large package, containing 100s of trading cards from the states. The contents were described as "near mint" when they arrived i was shocked to discover the condition was not only not near mint but practically every card was damaged. The seller lied and intentionally misdecribed his product. The lot cost me about £60 plus shipping. The shipping to return was quoted at £50 so i couldn't afford to return the item nor would i get even half the money i spent back if i did so it just wasn't worthwhile. So the seller got to keep his money and i was stuck with a large box of near unusable goods. It's still sat in the back of my wardrobe.
Imo this is one of the worst rules on ebay. Completely wrong. If it is proven that an item has not been described properly or faulty goods have been sent out then the seller should refund return postage. The buyer should not be out of pocket 1 penny. If you're returning an item cos you just don't want it or whatever then obviously that's the buyer's responsibility.

The total amount you paid including postage should be refunded and Imo your postage costs to return the item should also be met. Unfortunately though ebays policy is for the buyer to pay for return postage unless you can convince the seller to do so whilst you are in discussions.

I had an exactly the same issue recently, received an item clearly not as described so opened a case advised the seller I want to return the item for a full refund and they pay return postage. They agreed so thankfully I won't be out of pocket but it doesn't stop me from being annoyed that they were misleading in their listing.

If they don't pay for your return postage then you have to neg them but first try and encourage them to do the right thing.

Good luck

I guess it's down to how reasonable a human being the seller is. Since ebay don't enforce it its down to their conscience. I'm always a bit nervous until I've actually got the goods. Mind you I bought some xbox part recently which was DOA, and the seller just sent me another one, no questions asked.

Its another one of those stupid illogical rules that ebay have made. On the one hand you can't leave bad feedback for a shitty buyer, but then the buyer has to take the risk when spending money, especially when postage costs are high.

When i'm selling (on here, not sold on evil bay for a year or so) i offer full refunds, minus postage costs, if the buyer isn't happy with the item.
I work on the principal that no one makes money on postage. I normally estimate postage and nine times out of ten my estimate is below the actual cost, when it's not i refund the difference.

I've only ever had one item returned and that was because of a flaw that the buyer was aware of before hand, and had seen pictures of, but decided on seeing it in person that it was too much of an issue. I refunded him, minus postage, no problem at all.

Never sent the wrong item out, or deliberately mis-described an item, so i dunno what i would do in that situation. Hoping i wouldn't be dumb enough to send the wrong item out, and i hope my descriptions and pictures are pretty accurate.

If the item was blatantly not as described them you're probably entitled to ask for a full refund inc postage, but as the description can be quite open to interpretation, i think it's a bit of a grey area. Mind you on Evilbay.....

Good advice again chaps - thanks

I posted 3 items 2 recorded and one 1st class - I havnt heard back from the 1st class post item yet, Have i left myself open to scamming here? :?

In a word........yes! Lol

ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS, send recorded/tracked (unless it's only a few quid)

OK - The package I sent non -recorded arrived and the seller refunded :D

A 2nd package which was posted recorded has arrived, but the buy is giving me some bull about refunding the wrong guy and wanting me to phone him regarding the matter - yeah right

package no 3 - no contact from the knob despite several emails - I have opened a dispute in payapl but it wont let me esculate the claim, I can fill in the fields etc but then doesnt allow me to process it :? - I opened it a few days ago

This is the first time I've had problems returning item (they were all significantly not as described) and just like buses they have all came at once!

yes you should receive your postage costs back.

I had the same situation where i bought something not as described and it was going to cost about £20 to post it back, i contacted ebay and they directed me to a link where i printed the label off for free, they then charged the return costs to the buyers account LOL

so dont eat the return costs, contact ebay and tell them its going to cost you too much to return not as described goods.

Andy

Just thought I'd add what the items are - its pretty funny really

1. Barada - arrived with his head off! - ebayer 100% feedback and a high rating 800 odd

2. Corgi juniors lotus esprit 1977 - shown and described as fully sealed and clean - turned up bubble resealed with some writing on the card, bit of a joke again 100% feedback and rating of 700 odd - no contact from this guy despite numerous emails

****ing ebay guys!!

Things are looking better at least.

The second guy will refund I'm sure.

As for the third not replying you can escalate to eBay after a period time, should state within the case details. Hopefully you'll hear back otherwise it should be a simple case of eBay refunding after you've escalated.

Good luck :)
