You could get it shipped to the South (no UK customs), then get them to pop over the border and post in the UK mail for the normal Royal Mail costs.

Mate, you can drive the length or breadth of this country in two hours tops.
Pop over the border, and drive it to the person's house! It'd prob cost you less in petrol than it would in postage. 8)

I haven't got any paperwork to hand to check the code but you should be able to properly insure it.
