Open Discussion: Collectors Value and ebay strangeness

Alright, so here's something that's been on my mind since I started collecting, and while I have some thoughts on it, I'd like to get some other opinions on it.

Are people mad when it comes to vintage Star Wars and selling to other people?

Basically, I'm wondering when people are selling Star Wars figures and vehicles, there's a very wide idea of what something is worth and what people will buy. You might find a figure for say, $2 one place but find the same figure in the same state for $40 somewhere else, whether in a store or eBay or Craigslist or a garage sale.

Numerous times I've searched eBay and Craigslist, looking for any number of vehicles, parts, playsets or figures, and the prices vary wildly. Obviously one tries to find the best (and lowest) price for the item you're looking for, but most of the time you can't find it, or you have to buy a second or third of something you already have just to get the part you need, or it's in a lot of figures, most of which you already have.

The prices are the real issue. How does one figure out what something is worth just by looking at it? I'm not talking about getting things graded by AFA or whatever. Its more along the lines of one person looks at say, a loose Han Solo with his pistol, and decides that its worth $5, while another will try to sell it for $20-$60?

I think eBay is probably the worst in this regard. I was looking around there a bit ago, under "vintage star wars lot" and you have one person selling several complete figures and vehicles with boxes for say $200, and then you have another person selling a ton of what can barely be considered a vehicle or figure for astronomical prices! (The one that blew my mind was someone who had pretty much 1 of each of the major vehicles, not including mini-rigs, and most of them were not just missing parts, but whole chunks of the toy, and the person wanted over $1000 for them, not including shipping!)

I realize that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but this is ridiculous. I got into a discussion with a roommate recently about this, and told him I was blown away at the difference in prices for various toys and other things (like retro video game consoles, which I also collect). He basically said that people try to get as much as they can out of things they're selling, and considering star wars, some people think they can break the bank and get crazy amounts for what equates to junk in collectors eyes, and then you have other people who sell more realistically, and will set a price that is affordable and they know people will be willing to pay.

What do you all think? Is the market that crazy for vintage Star Wars? Are the prices that variable? Is it the mark of a good seller to put a low price point on an item so they can sell more of them, or should they rack up the price to "brand new, mint in box, never been touched" status even though the item clearly isn't? Or is it just a case by case basis, and there really isn't an average price on things?

Thoughts and feedback appreciated.

The answer to your question is that nothing in this game has an RRP, unlike say a second hand car which has a fairly set value. Prices fluctuate crazily due to time of year, trends, even a post on here or RS about a new rare item can quadruple it's value overnight (for a short period at least.)

I know it's not very helpful, but the best advice is pay what you are comfortable to. You WILL get some bargains, and you WILL (with hindsight) overpay sometimes. It's just the way it goes and part of the fun. Imagine how boring it would be if everything had an exact value. The thrill for me is the chase.

If you want estimations for your own slaes, recent ebay closing prices are the most accurate for a 'market value.' More often than not, forum prices are over-inflated due to the ease and peace of mind.

yep i agree i find that people who dont collect think they have star wars and its worth a fortune even tho they are all rubbish etc and not worth nothing

You also get plenty of people who find their old SW toys and think "Hey, SW, that's worth a fortune. I'll stick this old Klaatu with one leg on Ebay for £500 it'll sell in no time."

If you want a real life example, earlier this year I bought a complete set of 12 backs separately from many different sources (UK, USA, Canada, RS, ebay, and here.) I was very happy with the prices I paid for all of them.

6 months later, I sold them all. I started all prices at 25% above what I paid. I made a decent profit (25%) on about 3 of them, lost a decent amount (25% or more) on 4 of them, and almost exactly broke even on the remaining 5.

So that pretty much proves my point that even for a seasoned collector, it's impossible to get the best deal all the time. And that over time things will even out.

Ultimately something is only worth what someone will pay for it!!

Of course that does not always equate well to what someone is asking for it!!

Because so much in this hobby is to do with supply and demand, 'average' prices change all the time.

Plus, some people are just thick!

And on legitimately rare items some sellers would rather keep the item than sell it for less than they feel the bottom dollar value for the piece is. Personally, unless I was in a bind/trying to raise cash for an important purchase, I'd never sell anything less than breaking even, regardless of where the market on an item was at that point.

When it comes to common/production items, which is what I think the OP is referring to, as has been mentioned, check ended auctions for the items that you're looking for. You'll see some that slipped under the radar and went for a steal, and others that someone was either desperate, or someone that doesn't know the market just bought the first one they saw. Find the avg price that item is selling for at the time to determine current value. Also keep in mind that because of reputation, some more trusted sellers will consistently get buyers willing to pay a couple of dollars more for their items. It's because they trust that the seller isn't going to sell them an item that's been touched up, or that has any reproduction accessories, etc. ALSO as mentioned inexperienced sellers will just put anything that says SW on it, up at an insane price because that's the general misconception about SW items, that they're all worth thousands.

My best advice, do your homework before you start spending. If you're just starting out, there's nothing that you may miss now, that won't come up again for the same price or even less....and have fun!!

Cheers
Joe

That says it all really. It's a hobby and is supposed to be fun.

Where money becomes involved sometimes the fun can be diminished!

Research can be one of the best uses of your time in this hobby. eBay for all its faults can be a useful means to gather info on current values. I've always figured that's what the 'completed auctions' option was there for.

Collectors shows and forum are other useful sources. There are a number of threads running at the moment (one I started) about the value of things or the crazy prices people pay for items. Wild and crazy prices are part of the hobby ( and sometimes can be good for a laugh or gasps of amazement) and so research really does play a useful part, otherwise you could buy something that the rest of us will laugh at in a future thread!!

The 'it is from star wars so is worth a fortune' belief held by a lot of sellers...and many buyers... is common and longstanding. Neither really know a great deal other than 1. it's star wars and 2. it's worth a lot of money. Clearly neither have done any research!

dont know if its been said already but o fig.the prices can be verry far apart between the different coo's

for example, taiwan bikerscout wich you can find clean once for a tenner

wher for a macao,it can range from 70 to a 100 euro

another example is a regular yoda to an apple green yoda

same for most ledy's wich are way more expencive the the kenner once

specialy if there still mint on card

about the vehicles well i guess its all about condition

but yeah a standard price isnt really set for anything

you can always post in the value of section f your not sure if you will be overpaying for something you really want, and then again its worth as much as you want it,(to your self then)

I have noticed a general upward trend on ebay and several last 17 figs now pushing £30 where they used to be £20. Particular ones like Yak and R2 were always high. But buy it now prices from some sellers can be just ridiculous.

One strange example is Princess Leia (white cloak) - seems to be silly money these days. A original one at least.
