lego deathstar

I don't know what Lego is trying to do with the bigger sets such as the Death Star. Children love to have large play environments for their Lego minifigs which contain all kinds of action features. I don't believe that the answer is to produce great big play sets that need to be constructed from scratch out of a million little bits. Parents are put through all kinds of hell putting them together and once built, they are never going to be de-constructed, because who wants to go through building it again?

People who want a cool collectible also "can't be asked" to spend hour upon hour putting a Death Star together. The big Lego play sets inevitably contain thousands upon thousands of pieces and are consequently hugely expensive.

When I was a child, even the biggest Lego sets tended to be fairly basic, so they could be taken apart and put together again without much hassle. Now days the big Lego sets are rarely taken apart, which restricts creative play. The value of large sets also means that they tend to be kept in one piece, because they are worth a lot more constructed then as a pile of pieces. Parents often glue the more complicated Lego sets together – I have had quite a few heated discussions with people who were offended that I disagree with the practice!

Lego should produce a range of Lego stud compatible, ready-made play environments that children and collectors could use; a giant Death Star for instance the size of a beach ball would be ideal. The price could be kept down and everyone would have a much better experience "playing" with Lego. Of course there will always be the "Ultimate Collector Series" Lego sets for experts

The people I respect within the Lego hobby the most are the ones who create their own Death Stars and other models from Lego. They often download the instructions and either use the pieces they already have, or hunt down what they need. Personally I have never kept a Lego set as it was sold and I don't have a single one today!

If you are a collector who wants a large minifig Lego set, I would say that part of Lego is the joy of construction. If you're not going to enjoy constructing one, you might as well spend your money on something else because otherwise you're facing weeks of hell.

I have one answer to that money! That's what lego is about the same as any company that is ever formed. And good luck to ever thought the whole idea up. I wish it was me :) I believe lego translated is play and that's what all kids want :D
