hi there

bit new to all this .
when i had starwars stuff when i was a kid all the cards had kenner on.

now heres the problem, Do i collect just the kenner stuff or do i get a mix?

i.e is it best to get all the same card front stuff or is there rare stuff you can only get in palitoy.

its all very confussing !!!! :?

cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum,

A good reference for Kenner and what came out when, along with explanations on the different card back release then this is a superb link:

As for Palitoy: Palitoy were the UK licence holders/distributors however not everything made by Kenner was also made by Palitoy, Gary and Jason would I am sure be able to tell you everything about that side of things hehe.

Collectiing wise, go with what feels right tbh, I personally only remember Kenner so going Kenner all the way, and tbh think between Gary and Jason they have 90% of all the Palitoys anyway :)

I'n not as anti Kenner as I used to be now that I have a character focus that has a fair few in them. Collect what you like. I always remember the Palitoy logo as a kid, so that's what I tend to go for collecting wise.

:)

Yeah I too say go for what interests you. Its good to start with a mix and then get a feel for what you like. Quite often, money is a determining factor but not always.

Depends on a number of things I suppose

Kenner are generally a lot more plentiful in supply and therefore cheaper

However Palitoy,in my opinion, display much better

For me it's Kenner. But this goes back to the reason people collect which is different for everyone. I collect what i remember as a kid pure and simple. I almost never deviate from that rule. I don't ever remember seeing the Palitoy logo as a kid, they were always Kenner so that's what i largely collect. I do have 1 Palitoy moc in my collection cos i got it cheap and i have absolutely nothing against them, i actually think they look pretty cool, i just have no drive to collect them. There will be people with the opposite experience with Palitoy instead of Kenner and so they collect Palitoy and there are some collectors on here who weren't even alive in 1985 so you'll have to ask them why they collect toys from 1977, 81, 83 etc.
As i said, this is different for everyone so you need to make your own mind up.

I think the best bit of advice has been said many times...collect what interests you the most!

To be honest, in most cases there's very little between kenner and Palitoy. Because I remember hte Palitoy logo from when I was a kid, that's why I collect Palitoy now. I don't Palitoy is any better than Kenner, it's purely a nostalgic thing!

I originally started with Kenner as they were more plentiful and cheaper. People collection palitoy for a variety of reasons, some because they are rare, some like the look of the logo, and some simply because they cost more and like to have the most expensive items. Each to their own.

The only thing i think is definitely worth getting on both are the playest/vehicle variations between Palitoy and Kenner. Though i am mainly a Palitoy collector I do have both versions of the classic one, Death Star, Land of the Jawas etc.

But like many have said, it really comes down to what you will enjoy collecting.

I collect a mix of everything without any real solid direction. i have some collecting goals I would like to such as all POTF Carded and all 12 Backs.

Really I collect because I love Star wars and in particular the orignal trilogy so I mainly collect vintage figures! :)

I'm amazed thst some people can (or claim to) remember things like which logo was on the box of a toy they bought 30 years ago! I remember having the toys and have one vague memory of a wall of tri logo MOCs in a Grimsby toyshop, but I certainly can't remember photo-like images from moments in time that long ago when I was so young!

I think for me part of being able to remember is having a lot of the cardbacks while a child with the logo on.

We also had a lot of action man stuff which also had the logo, and having a dad who worked for a toy company, I was aware of logos/company names.

I also remember seeing Kenner and the large head han and thought it was a cheap version of the ones I had...I only had seen the pin head version.

Ah yes I never thought about cardbacks, I usually lost the weapons and capes within minutes of opening the figures, let alone keeping the packaging

I'm talking more about the kind of recollections I've seen in the past (especially over on RS) of people's vivid memories of being in toy shops, almost like a reconstruction. Fair play to them if their mind is that sharp!

I can certainly remember som details even back in the 70's.

I remember clearly seeing a Kenner death star in my local toy shop. I had no idea what it was and completely forgot all about it until I saw a picture of the Kenner death star in Sansweet's book and the memories came back.

Hey ed_jedi what Grimsby toy shop was it that you remember?? Normans down Freeman street, Ramsdens and the newsagents down Freeman street are the best memories for me of Star wars toys.

Re the memory thing (bit of topic I know but) I remember getting my land-speeder from modern toys in Oadby (Leicestershire) like it was yesterday, I had been saving for the bloody thing so long it stayed with me, I can even still remember the exact shoe floor layout, where certain toy lines were displayed etc & can remember at least 4 toy shops like that one down to small details, I for some reason have an excellent long term memory & can remember some things from as early as the age of 4, though my short term memory is shot to ****, though I put that down to fact I lived my life way too fast when I was in my 20's.

Wish I still has that speeder, its was a palitoy one with the none open bonnet, hey the good old days :)

& back on topic - do what your gut tells you!

I have no idea unfortunately mate, I barely remember it. Just a hazy memory of a figure display. I wish I knew!
