Hi all

I have just joined the forum today having spent my entire Saturday looking at all my old vintage Star Wars toys in the loft and it has made me realise I want to grow my collection and get involved with what looks a great community

I have lots of old vintage figures but all are loose and I really wish I had kept the card backs but of course I didn't. So I am spending some time getting to know whats good and whats not - before I found this forum I found this link on ebay which looks a great place to start adding to my collection but wanted to know what you all thought of it and if I am just wasting my money?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-STARWARS-FIRST-21-ACTION-FIGURE-SET-OWN-THE-SET-YOU-LONG-FOR-AMAZING-BUY-/190833499882?pt=UK_Collectables_SciFi_fantasyCollectables_EH&hash=item2c6e901eea

I am just starting to understand the terminology but yet understand the implications of this recard business so forgive my ignorance

Basically I want to build a really cool collection of original figures on cards - am I starting in the wrong place?

Appreciate all your views

Personally I would never advocate the use of recards.
Some people would say that as long they stay in your possession and they're not sold on with intention to deceive then there's no harm.
Look at it like buying a fake rolex, it looks real but deep down inside you know it's just a cheap imitation, why would you? not only that but ALOT of people that produce counterfeits (and no matter how it's explained that's exactly what these things are) are usually crooks, do you really want to pay money to people who are (possibly) drug dealers, thieves, scam artists, money launderers etc etc??
Well that's my two penneth.

300 pounds- massive waste of money. Chances are the weapons will be fake as well. With patience you'll find the first 21 figures for 150-200 pounds. In the time you take hunting them down ( which is half the fun ) you'll 'understand' the hobby a lot more & you'll decide to spend your money more wisely.

AJ is on the money here bud

It's all down to what drives YOU though pal

Recardss are facsimiles, copies, don't carry the weight of an original
Some of the MOC s traded on here are awesome, and swapping trading and buying is safe fun and you know you are getting the real deal.
The guys on this forum are the best, and all take time to answer questions, support and advise, and help you on the road to become more knowledgeable in your own right
There is a wealth of information at your fingertips here, and you will learn bud

Records are a quick fix and a bit like having a blow up doll as opposed to a caring sharing partner ( sorry for the crudity, sorry Todd before you slag me  )

In all seriousness mate, get your loosies together, take some pics and put them up on here for us all to look at, then have a chat and a trawl around the forum and decide which way you want to go...focus on a certain run, character, mocs, loosies, boxed vehicles....bud it's all part of the fun and is totally addictive :!:

Welcome on board pal and don't stray to the recard dark side is my advice

Gets some pics up buddy let us share...you'll be pleasantly surprised at the response. Nobody is judging here....if you want that there's always RS

Great responses - thanks guys it was just the info I needed. I am going to upload a few pics in a minute but it's only part of my collection. You probably won't believe me but the reason I got the collection out of the loft is because my brother-in-law runs a Prop making company at Pinewood Studios and he is going to be working on the new films. I am sure you all saw the news yesterday about the films being made in the UK and my bro-in-law is going to be a huge part of it. It's all about 3d printing and scanning for the new films.

Anyway as we were excitedly talking about how he's going to be busy for the next 9 years working on the new films we decided to raid the loft with the aim of setting up a display cabinet in his meeting room at Pinewood Studios. So my collection is going to be in the best place in the world! The home of the new films!

I know they want to keep the new films as true to the originals as possible and forget the car crash of the recent 3 films and so it's such a buzz for me to have my childhood collection on display at the film studios.

So I am going to target my collection like this, I want to get all original first 21 and put them on display at Pinewood. So I need to start my hunt and will keep asking you guys for advice as I go along and learn the good from bad, I am glad I asked you all about that crap on ebay - I would have been ashamed to put them on display at the studios - how embarassing!

So anyway, waffle over, I will upload a few pics I took in the loft and when they are on display in a couple of weeks I will show you all the full collection

Really glad to have found this place - I am already addicted!

Here are a few pics - will show the complete collection when on display!

Let me know if I have done it right and you can all see them?

We're really nice guys, and any free passes to the Pinewood Studios would be gratefully received

Seriously bud, that's so cool, I'm sure you'll get the support you need

Recards would have been a Faux Pas to say the least

Best thing to do is introduce yourself on the relevant section of the forum and enjoy :D

Looking forward to the pics, bit of advice, use photbucket, of Flikr etc avoid uploading massive pics as its a nightmare and ruins the thread,

Good luck, awesome that you can get involved in the way you are

Nice collection you have there  love the B-Wing & the Tri-logo FR. It's a good decision not to get into Reproductions as its a buzzkill for the hobby & would have been a disgrace to show at the studios!!! But the more you post and search the forum the more you will learn.

That's cool your brother in-law is working on the new movies, you lucky :D

Anyways peace to you & yours bro.

June

Thanks for sharing the pictures, some nice conditioned boxes there!
Cool to hear your brother-in-law will be working on the new films. I'm not surprised that they're going down the rapid prototype path with the props as it's probably the most cost effective way to do things now. I'm just hoping that they'll pull the green screen back to a minimum on these next ones as the lack of real locations on the prequels really killed the atmosphere for me.

As for the re-cards I myself first bought some of these when I got into collecting Star Wars several years ago. At the time I couldn't really warrant spending so much money on original moc's and thought the re-cards would be the next best thing. When my first bundle arrived I was happy for about 10 minutes but as I had these things growing up they never really looked right to me. I decided then and there that I had to get originals and went ahead with a collection. The funny thing with collecting is once you've completed your goal you tend to always start looking for the next thing and although a kenner collection of 12 backs was cool to own I realised that it was the Palitoy logo ones that I really desired so set about getting them. As the cost for these items jumps up from the kenner ones I settled on original opened/resealed card backs in good condition. My point to all of this is that I'd rather own an opened/resealed original card back than a re-card any day of the week so if you don't want to spend a huge amount of cash you could also go down this route. There are plenty of resealed Kenner card backs that come up for sale on ebay if you can be patient and also if you're just after the first 21 and not worried about which film logo is on the card then it shouldn't cost you too much to put a moc collection together.

All the best with which ever path you choose but you may as well stay away from the re-cards as you'll probably find that they never quite hit the mark for you after owning the originals as a child.

I've got a beautiful 12 back Stormie in my sales thread - but it is a bit more expensive than these recards :D

Just wondering why it is that most people new to the hobby head straight for the pinnacle with wanting 12/21 backs? Isn't that like passing your driving test and then saying 'right, I want a Ferrari'
A beat up 12 back vader looking worse for wear or a momc rotj Vader for half the price? Everyone to their own I suppose.

Hi monkey

You've hit the nail on the head...each to his own, that's what makes SW collecting so varied, it's about what floats YOUR boat and not what a select few may expect

We are all collecting with our own spin if everyone went for the same thing that being a 12 back MOC or a walrus man beater it would make that the harder to collect

Just my thoughts though

Variety is the spice of life

A good collection already boxes look in great shape, they look great in afa/ukg style cases, would display well at the studios.

Like the collection 8)

Welcome to the forum. It's great here. Best SW forum going .....by a LONG way
