Is it possible to tell which card a loose figure came from?

Perhaps a silly question - but unless a person saw or took a figure off a card themselves, how would it be possible to tell which card version they came off. I was just intriuged by auctions such as this:

Yeah, I guess. Bit misleading, or at least annoying when people put Palitoy or AFA etc all over their auction titles in an effort to get noticed. Makes it a bugger to search ebay!
 
depends on the figure and COO, but you can tell what card soem figs came from.
 
palitoys are usually easy to spot too with there erased coo it looks "smoothed over" on the figures

true, but the early Palitoys are generally the same as the Kenner ones
