Hey fellas,

I purchased a second hand Imac last year ( 2011 27 3.4 GHz i7 ) from a chinese gentleman, it works brilliantly but when I try do do any updates and I get asked to enter an Apple ID password it still has his email address entered with no option to change it. I'm a complete and utter numb skull when it comes to tech and from what I've been able to find on google it will require a complete format of my hard drive in order to change the computers ID.

I know I should have done this when I first purchased it  but it now has all of my files and programs on it and clearing all that to start again would be a major pain in the arse. Anyone of you learned gents know a way around this or am I stuffed?

Cheers Ryan.

Sorry Barry that one's gone straight over my head mate :? :D but I am quite thick so it's no surprise.

Thanks Rich, I just tried doing that but when it gets to the update prompt in the app store it still has the previous owners email in the log in section with no option to change it.

Might give Apple a call during the week and see if there is another way.

Thanks for your hep bud much appreciated

Then I've bad news for you because without getting the password you're screwed.
If you can contact the original guy and ask him to give you the password (if he's forgot he can go to iforgot.com to reset it) then you can sign him out and you in.

Message from a mate who works for Apple:

They just need to sign out of the account that the App Store is signed into (open AppStore and click sign out on the left) then sign in with their own Apple ID and purchase (for free) OS X Yosemite, they don't need to download it, just have it on their account.

It would then allow them to install the updates.

Hope that helps...

Hey Savory, thanks so much for taking the time to message your mate, much appreciated. It prompted me to have another look at it and I think I've finally worked out what is going on.

Turns out only certain Apps were requesting confirmation of the previous owners email in order to complete updates  :? I deleted those particular Apps and performed updates on the system with no dramas using my own Apple ID. :D

I'll try the upgrade to Yosemite next week and see how that goes, bloody relieved that it appears to have been a simple resolve and says a bucket load for my tech skills

Thanks again fellas!
