How do people feel about mentioning upcoming auctions, like Vectis?

We're not supposed to put links to running eBay auctions, so how do people feel about other auctions such as Vectis being mentioned in advance?

Is there a good reason for advanced notice of upcoming auctions on here, or should they be banned?

Because everyone under the sun knows well about them in advance. They're promoted all over facebook. It's been like that for over a year now. There is no way any vectis auction is going to slip under the radar. Ebay is different.

It wasn't always this way but with the high profile auctions Vectis have had in the last year or so and the fact that they promote on their site, their FB page, the shows they attend, on tv (if they get the chance) and crank out magazines etc means it's kind of pointless to stop people discussing them on here. TBH, if anything it's created some good discussion since it's been happening and the "live" auction creates a bit of fun and entertainment for those watching and talking about the ending prices so it's all good.

Obscure off the radar eBay auctions are totally different IMO, Vectis auctions in comparison are about as well advertised as they come.

I think individual lots on eBay that are 'unknown bargains' are still there to be found. Vectis though is under the microscope every time they run an auction, every lot is worldwide news all over Facebook etc.

Vectis have a few hundred lots of Star Wars every couple of months (based on the last 18 months or so) compared to eBay's tens of thousand lots live everyday.. (23.5k with Vintage Star Wars in the title right now, let alone the 651k that have Star Wars in the title...). Therefore I don't really think they're comparable and the needle in the haystack on eBay is a precious thing to find and snag, hence the desire for more discreet (or no) discussion on such lots.

I think the fact that members here do mention them sums this place up: it's not about self. There are more than enough toys to go around and sure, maybe mentioning it here will cost you a couple of quid more but in all likelihood, it won't.

We have a shared interest and passion and you only have to look at the selfless acts that go on here daily: from the giveaways and prize draws to the unexpected bonuses that arrive with forum purchases, from fundraisers for individuals to the fundraisers for good causes. Mentioning it here will get a few more people interested in buying from there. It may alert someone who wasn't aware or remind someone who had forgotten. Good! I'm glad about that and I've bought plenty from Vectis.

Finally, do we want another rule? No! Another thing that makes this place awesome is the lack of bloody rules. If we decided in favour of highlighting auctions on ebay (which we did) then I can't see a day when we'll not treat live auctions the same way.

I don't think eBay and Vectis are the same. Vectis has one list, one sale date at a time, all items are in clear view for weeks, there are no hidden or badly listed items, it's 100% transparent. Yet you can still pick up bargains there - I've landed two trilogo MOCs in the last year for well under "market" value.

Outing eBay auctions is completely different IMO, however there is no rule against outing open auctions here either. See the rules for clarification:

Vectors is so big I think everyone is aware, although from a buyers point of view the fewer people who know the better!

I won't go in to detail again but my personal main argument for not having an auction outing rule here is that a seller has more right to a fair price for their item than you do to getting it cheaper. This applies to both eBay and Vectis.

No-one has a god given right to own anything - we all like a bargain but sometimes I think we lose track of why this hobby is fun - it is about community, making friends and sharing a passion. You can't do any of those things if you are a selfish fecker

And second opinions on items can be helpful to newer collectors ie. estimating value, spotting issues, reproductions etc.

I remember thinking how strange it was when I first went to America aged 12 that everyone was introducing themselves as Irish, Italian etc. Us Brits don't go around telling people we're vikings :lol:
