High end ?

After reading a particular for sale thread which infers there are not many high end collectors on this forum what price constitutes a high end item .
Also with prices being as they are I presume there are a lot more figures etc that will now fall in the high end bracket.
Any thoughts guys?

The comment that got your attention in that FS thread says "high grade" rather than "high end", two completely different things in my book.

I do think it would be interesting to see where people think high end starts (price wise).
I know it's subjective.
But for example a loose vinyl Cape Jawa is somewhere about £300 to £400 but AFA 85 suddenly becomes £750 to £1000 does this now mean it's high end?
Any thoughts

Yeah if it's my comment your on about, that's exactly what I was thinking. Infact I checked back to make sure I did not type high end as that's completely different to what I typed and ment. I think their's plenty of collectors on here that collect high end stuff, but not necessarily high grade.

High end I suppose relates directly to value. It's a bit of a misnomer I suppose where Star Wars is concerned. I have 12 backs. They are not graded. They are not what I would class as high end as I know dozens of people who own them. If I sent them away to be graded and they came back 85/85/85 then they would suddenly become high end collectables.

Perhaps it's a throwaway tag for bragging rights.

Depends on your personal circumstances. £500 is a months rent to some people. To others it's a night out

I think it depends on your personal financial circumstances.

For me, a 'high end' item would be a Palitoy Death Star, loose VCJ or Imperial Shuttle.
The items that would be at the limit of what I would feel comfortable spending my hard earned cash on.

To some lucky people, these would just be a starting point.

I dont think it necessarily relates to what money is thrown down but it does relate to what is collected.
Take the recent Fett Palitoy 30b MOC, yes that buyer is high end collector in my book but so is the guy who found one in the wild and only threw down a fraction of the cost of the vectis one.

I thought this forum was full of high end collectors. I'm not one of them but surely they are here. If you have a set of first 12 MOC's I would say that's high end, right? Very sought after, very valuable. High end.

Nice definition Steve. Some random examples I would class as 'High end' are: carded DT Luke, Ben or Vader, carded Vlix and first shots of the first 12 figures. Basically anything that is extremely rare and expensive.

I'm struggling to think of the right word, but in my opinion I think the items you're quoting there Nick are at the extreme end of high end collecting, I think most people would consider stuff like that as true "grail" items.

I think the range of high end items would encompass more than those you mention, but yes as Steve said, I think it's some combination of grade, condition or rarity. If say, you had some AFA 90 MOC's then I'd have thought they'd be considered high end, purely because it's rare to find an AFA 90 anything (and they'd be expensive), despite the fact they could be relatively common to find at lower grades.

On a chart, it would be the top x percent of stuff - cost, rarity or grade but x would be different for everyone because doesn't have the same budget etc.

This. It's only the investors and the mongs on Facebook who need to place a label on something.

I think there's plenty of collectors here that collect both high end and high grade, both of which are relatively subjective definitions. To generalise the type of collector on this forum is not possible. The diverse nature of collectors here is the secret of its success, I think.

And if "high end" means "overpriced", then I'm happy leaving that part of the market to the overpaying fools on Facebook (not that they all are; a gross generalisation on my part. Damn, seems to be catching) who seem to collect more for other people's enjoyment than their own :wink:

Ok guys
I started this thread to try and get an idea of what people thought the starting number was for a high end item.I know it will be different for everyone.
With all due respect the term high end does exist and means a different amount to each of us because we all have different budgets we can afford to spend at any given time.
The thread seems to have gone off on a bit of a tangent regarding the definition and perceived meaning of the term.
This was not my intention.
