Good progress this week, the new roof is on! We just need to do the windows and roof over the new entrance hall, and the outside will be done.

I also got my first glimpse of the new first floor today (had to climb up there with a ladder as the stairs aren't in yet.) Previously this was a tiny attic space with little protection from the outside, as you can see in the first photo.

It`s coming along nicely Edd, quite like a Velux window, we had to use light tunnels ourselves. Natural light does make a difference.

The windows and roof over the entrance were fitted this week, they just need to fit the wooden cladding around the windows (because thanks to Mr Planning it needs to look like a stable ) and the outside will be finished! Then on to the bit I'm really looking forward to, the inside...

I've been doing a lot of thinking about shelves for my collection. I currently have Ikea Billy book cases, and while I really like the build quality, I don't like how deep they are, and how massive the shelves look, obscuring a lot of the view:

I haven't managed to find any shallower book cases for a reasonable price, but I found out that they sell glass shelves for Billy book cases, so went to Ikea this morning to buy one and try it out. Much better:

So I think I'll stick with the Billy's and just replace all the thick wooden shelves with glass.

Good choice Edd.
I have replaced most of my Billy shelves with glass ones and the overall effect is so much better.
They also look better when lit too.

Yes thanks for the sugestion, but I definitely need a bookshelf as want to store games as well as MOCs. The ideal depth would be about 20cm (Billy is 28cm.) Argos do one, but it's not very tall. I looked into getting one custom made and it would be hundreds of pounds, can't really justify it when the Ikea one is £55!

You could ask your carpenter if the ikea one could be cut down. I doubt it would take long to do, and they could make it stronger by glueing the panels and adding more dowels.
( I built 2 wardrobe frames last week, and it's only 2 types of fixings in each corner for pax)
