Corrosion

I've done this in the past, worked for me mate...

Cotton buds ( Q Tips) baking powder

Put some BP in a little receptacle mix with a little water to a paste
Rub on the contacts with the cotton bud to clean off the gunk
Use a clean cotton bud to then take it off
Then damp paper towel to get the residue off
Let it air dry for an hour or so ( use a hair dryer if your impatient)

Pop your new batteries in on off you go

Did it with my ATAT and Falcon , worked a treat

Good luck

Wear some gloves as well when messing with battery acid residue and dispose of all the stuff you've used safely
