anybody got some good tips on indoor aqauariums.. i have just filled up and got the temp up to 78 degree's and just need to get the water ready for the fish . i have added some solution that is supposed to neutralise the calcium and other minerals but the water has turned a bit blue

going to get some plants today and hopefully they can give the tank some balance.... but any tips would be greatly appreciated

Ideally you should leave the water for about 2 weeks. before putting the fish in.

At least that's what i was always told to do.

Was it something like Aqua-safe you put in?

You getting Tropical fish?

Gary is right on that one especially if its a completely new set up ,you need time for the filter to mature, dont worry about the colour of the water at the moment it may even go really cloudy but it will clear, thats just the natural process of bacteria etc stabalizing
Also dont put too many fish in to begin with because you could kill them all start with about 4/5 max and leave them for a couple of weeks to make sure they survive
then if alls well you can add more if you want to

i take it we are talking about tropical fish?

yep , tropical fish

the filter was my mums old one so there is some bacteria in the there. have added the plants today and it is a little clearer this afternoon . tested the water and the gh and ph are ok but a little higher than i wanted, the guy at the aquarium said the same as you 2 and will test it again in a weeks time. the water is hard around this area ( like the star wars collecters) so will have molly's and barbs and neon tetra's to start with .

thanks for the advice lads

Make sure also you only get community fish!!!!

Certain fish as well, such as Angel fish, can be quite territorial. They can sometimes be best when put in last.

The people at the shop should advice.

Definitely start with just a few to begin.

I use to have terrapins as pets and although there was a filter after a while the water just got grubby and stones got green slime on them and then i had to use a tube to suck up the water so it could drain and it wasnt a nice taste :)

whatever you do dont get a catfish my nan did and now all she has left is a fat catfish!!! The bugger ate all the other fish and hides all day comes out at night.

Only get those if that is what you really want. Remember fish can live many years and if you dont really like them to start with then you are stuck with them.

Here is a picture of one of my tanks. It contains lake malawi ciclids. I had them imported from africa. The picture dont do them justice as they are really bright yellow and the males are really bright blue. The look the dogs but you cant put any other fish in there or they will rip them to bits.

they look great twofoot , i will post a pic of the aquarium when the fish are in .

i was told the water around here is suited best to hardy fish and if i soften it up to much the garden centre fish wont like it. i am happy with any fish and would love them to breed. so will go for something that breeds commonly in a nice enviroment

we once had 3 gold fish ,and we had to change them nearly ever ****ing day .one day vicar came round to bless house (another story)and kaz was nagging me to clean tank out.any way when he came i still hadnt done it so quickly put them out in back garden.when i remembered and went out to get them they had all froze to death
