Anyone here ever had a summer house built?

Slowly but surely I'm getting my new place into some sort of organised shape.

Still a long way off having a collection room, but am looking to have a training area as I've now recovered mostly from injuries/operations and need to get myself back into shape especially having just shifted 4 stone in weight!

I was thinking that the only place I could potentially accommodate my gear is in a summer house at the bottom of the garden which I am currently redesigning.

Anyone know what sort of things to look out for in a summer house? Prices, strength and durability etc?

decent thickness and tannalised wood lol

most fencing companies supply summer houses now and you can barter good discounts off them too

also when its arrived paint it with timber oil not paint, gives a lovely natural finish and soaks into th wood.

Cheers

I saw this one... http://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/Summerhouses/The-BillyOh-4000-Lucia-Range/17934 and wonder if that would be good enough? I need a fairly large one and this is 12' x 10'

It's also at a price I can afford.

Make sure you add the floor and base into that too, its added extra in the options

will it be going on a flat surface like slabs? or on grass?

Knowing nothing about these, my main concern would be how hot they get in the summer and how cold they get in the winter. I presume they're all watertight.

Cheers Jason

In summer they are usually fine, they dont get too hot, in winter they can be cold as there is no insulation, but you can improve that with fibreglass and some boards, also get an electric extension to the summer house, should cost much or do it yourself, then you can get a fan for summer and heater for winter. Those dyson hot and cold air fans look quite good although expensive.

They will be watertight mate, and good felt should last 10 years before you need to lay some more, just keep the wood oiled (if its tannelised it generally doesnt need it, but it looks nicer)

As part of the work to my garden I'm having a concrete base fitted. I had considered the floor/base they offer and was wonder if it would be up to the task when supporting weights/equipment.

My friend's an electrician so he'll happily wire it up for me.

And the guy who's helping me build it has already suggested insulating with additional boards.

Its best to have both mate, a concrete base and the floor and supports, this allows airflow under the summerhouse and prevents damp settling into the floor, if it sits on concrete you will get a wet floor if you know what i mean.

Their floor should be fine, do a search for billy-oh on google to check out reviews, its a common brand sold by a lot of garden profile companies.

if not you can make your with timber from woodyard or wickes

I wouldn't keep a collection outdoors, certainly not if there's any card involved. Sheds get damp. They aren't anywhere near as well insulated as houses. Years ago we moved house and stored some framed posters in ny mums shed. It's a decent well built shed but after a month or so in storage the posters had gone wavy due to moisture in the air. Not good.

I reckon an attic is better for storage of collections than a shed

Cheers. I'll do some further research. I like that one as it's the size I want and a good price. Others seem to be a hell of a lot dearer, into several thousands, so wasn't sure if this just a really crap make/version

It's not for my collection. Certainly wouldn't be anywhere big enough. It's for my weight training gear

You can get nice concrete garages for just over 2k, would be perfect for gym stuff.

But ask around local fencing and shed companies, they usually source good materials, generic churned out stuff can be thin wood. You get what you pay for.

Ah right! No problems there then. Bought a new potting shed this summer. I love a good shed :D
