Hey it might just be mindless babbling but, i genuinely have gone through about 4 distinct phases since i decided to sell the bulk (not all) of the collection.
i dont know if anyone who has sold up has felt this,, but maybe you have, or maybe its just, me.

For a start i have always been a nostalgic person,, keeping contert tickets and maps of places i have been , but not keeping junk, i have cleared attics and chucked lost oif stuff i had as a kid,, including a blue ralieigh burner with yellow mags

But the descision to sell 90% of what i had was almost outta my hands as needs dictated.
But when the time came to sell,,,jesus H christ on a bike it was hard.

stages.

1.Delaying- ahh it be grand i will sell something else or a relative will die?? mentioning to everyone who know how you value your collection that you will be selling. hoping some thing will micraculously happen.

2.Panic - as you hit list, or post up those figs you took so damn long to get together. consider bidding on things yourself to get em back once listed. :|

3.Remorse - packing things and taking hours to do it and thinking that they are worth so much more than money. :(

4.The ahhhh **** it stage- whatever, your mind kicks into some kind of defense mechanism, and you dont care,, "5 at-at commander sold for .99p bite me" at this stage you start to slagg off your old self and collecting habits,,

5.the what was i thinking stage - when all the sales add up and , even though you got less than what you initially paid,, the cost of collecting hits home in one big bang,, the bit most of us never consider or worse take a calculator too. or look in the side bar on ebay "total bought for 3 months" WTF

6. the no interest at all stage - star wars ?? oh yeah i used to have a thing for that.! vintage skateboards you say???Nah i'd only ****in skate em.

7. the itch stikes back - hmmm ,wonder whats happening on the forum, ebay, local car boot? Staring at a vintage re-issue moc in a toy store ,, and seriously considering buying it,, for like 20 fecking minutes.

and thats where i have got too right now.
i know i was collecting a wet week but it really grabbed me, and now i have a nice small collection of the things i really have attachment too,,,,,but the image of that hanger with all the army lined up still haunts me,,where i would put it?? **** knows?

i used to read this forum all day,, but over the last month i have almost never been on. it feels odd been so immersed and then not. :?

anyway i am still moochin around and talkin crap.

cheers peeps

nut :D

I know what you mean Steve. In February when I had no job I was starting to look at the figures I had and which ones I could let go and the others where I just thought, "NO WAY!"

Luckily the wife has a **** hot job and she was great.......... I got more pressure from my old man than the wife to think of selling some stuff!

Times are hard mate, they've been ****ing **** for me for about 3 years now and hopefully *touches wood (not that kind   * things are looking up.

It's a shame you're not on here much though mate - when I wasn't buying anything I was still on here every day, mainly reading about things that had nothing to do with SW!

Chin up dude, things will get better :)

Well i'm glad collecting is still very much on your mind Steve. It seems everyone has these phases where your more into it one minute and not interested the next. It's natural. But like you i've always been nostalgic and even when i haven't bought anything for months i often have a look at my shelves at all the stuff i've collected and get a sense of satisfaction.
The good thing is about this hobby that tho some may see it as a waste of time and tho we may "spend way too much on it" to my knowledge it is the only hobby where the money you spend on it stays there. Yeah, like you say, you may lose a few quid on the odd item but generally everything you've spent money on will pay you back basically the same amount. Yeah it's sad when someone has to sell their collection and i hope i never do. The point for me was always to get back those thing i had when i was a kid and tho i may one day lose interest in collecting (inevitable) i don't see that as a reason to sell my collection. I've always found that a very strange habit of SW collectors. Makes the whole thing completely pointless.

I hope you do start buying back some of the things you had to get rid of. Even if just partially. Like mentioned, it's not throwing money down the toilet. Spending 1k on SW toys makes more sense than spending 1k on literally anything else. Cos in a year, 2 years, 10, you're likely (practically certain) to get back what you paid for it if and when the time comes that you feel the need to get rid of it again.

Oh, and stay on the forums either way. Or we'll be having words...

Collecting is a way of life, not some dusty old figures stuck in a cupboard :D I've sold up several times and always get back into it sooner or later.

thanks guys

i am pretty much out of the woods as far as cash is concerned, i still have a solid job which i am thankful for and i have many many back up plans, when i do get back into it i just gotta take it a little slower.

still after reading some of the banter i missed, especially in the valuations thread, i laughed my arse off.
yer all nuts

I have bought 1 thing in about 18 months, and sold a bucket load, but I still come on here.
Someone has to keep you lot in check and teach you all about Star Wars!

Good effort on 1000 posts BTW Steve!
