Hey guys,

Saw this earlier:

http://www.cnet.com/news/george-lucas-says-disney-ditched-his-ideas-for-star-wars-the-force-awakens/

Bit strange, but hmmm its their choice. I thought that Lucas original draft for part 7 would have been used as a storyline?? Obviously as i have zero interest in any new material i hadnt known about this.

One other thing-are all the Dark Horse comic / EU storylines now technically 'redundant' in the scheme of things ?? Ive always been a fan of comics, not only for story but for artwork but do they mean nothing now?? I suppose if you are like me and just in the 6 movie saga camp, you can still beleive this storyline above the new one. Im not going to see TFA or any stand alone movies, so my Star Wars stays as is - 6 movies and Lucas influenced only, plus i like some of the EU etc. I know some dont like the way i see it, but thats me.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but im just intrigued by this.

I think I'm right in thinking that almost all of the EU stuff has been kicked to the curb. Its a shame as in amongst the rubbish is/was some good stuff, the Zahn trilogy for example. More worryingly is that if they are happy to ditch all this what else will be thrown out when the next moneymaker comes along.

I liked elements of the zahn trilogy. Didnt like the idea of ysalmiri or whatever they were called, those lizard things that were like kriptonite and canceled out force powers.
I really liked shadows of the empire in the 90s as well and the first force unleashed game/novel. Shame everythings been classed as non canon.

There was a reboot of the original Star Wars Expanded Universe in the 1990s with the arrival of West End Games. In a letter to me, the Editor of WEG stated that Lucasfilm had instructed that the Marvel comics, the newspaper strip, Splinter of the Minds's Eye and the poster magazines should be completely ignored. Unfortunately WEG also took little notice of the Sketch Books, Art of books, the novelizations and the radio dramas. Fortunately a few references to the original material was fixed into Star Wars "lore" such as Princes Leia's ship being called "The Tantive IV" (from the radio drama). Unfortunately the West End Games material featured exceptionally poor observation of the Star Wars films too.

I can understand why the 1990s reboot of the Star Wars Universe was deemed to be necessary, because nobody involved in the production of the new Star Wars material had the time to read the old stuff. It also provided a blank sheet for new writers to create their adventures. The second reboot that is currently underway is happening for exactly the same reasons. The aspects that are fixed into Star Wars "lore" will be retained.

It may seem surprising but I consider the Star Wars "Expanded Universe" to be anything that was published before West End Games and the Timothy Zhan trilogy. The Marvel Comics and newspaper strip, supported by the other pre-1990's publications is a continuous storyline that exists in its own "bubble". Attempts to retrospectively cram every Star Wars source together in compendiums of characters or timelines (and on Wookiepedia) is a waste of time because the individual story arcs are wrecked and too many events and explanations clash.

People who have based their idea of Star Wars on the second Expanded Universe, could imagine it as one possible outcome of the events. An alternate Star Wars Universe, which may prove to be better than the one that is currently being concocted. I know that's not a great consolation. I've been there.
