How can this be right if they weren't made until 1985?

The date stamp 1977 remained the same throughout all lines sw 77 potf 85 the only vintage figure to do so

Yes. The date stamp wasn't modified to 1895 until the figure was re-released as part of the droids line.

Indeed - so if you do find one with a 1985 date stamp it is either a big old fake or worth a tonne of money
