We seem to have two differing opinions in this thread regarding which version was released first. Does anyone know definitively whether the stickered or the printed version came out first? I'd love to know the answer!
Yes. Would be interesting to know for sure one way or the other.

Stickered version was first to hit the shelves I'm sure. The artwork for the printed box probably wasn't done in time and Palitoy were eager to get what must have been a shipment direct from Kenner onto the shelves - hence the hamfisted attempt to get their logo over Kenners.

Then the printed logo must have been released, and the reason why this one is rarer is weird because you'd have thought the stickered version would have been harder to find. My only reasoning would be the Open Belly version then hit the shelves and they stopped production of the solid version.

I've now seen quite a few printed logo examples out there so it seems whilst rarer, they're not impossible to find either.

Many thanks indeed for your reply and thoughts. I appreciate you taking the time to answer, and what you say does make perfect logical sense. However, my only problem is that so does the hypothetical scenario where Palitoy's printed box run was released first, but due to underestimating demand and or production difficulties, they couldn't meet demand and hence slapped some stickers on some Kenner examples to keep the shelves full.

I guess what I'm asking is do you know for a fact that the printed logo one definitely came out first, or is this your considered conclusion of what is the most likely scenario, drawn from your years of collecting experience? Thanks.

I'm confused (easily done) but am I missing another post on here?   Who's saying the stickered one is the later release?

I honestly have no idea which one came first BUT logically, from someone who has some experience in print and toy manufacture, it would take more effort to print die cut stickers and stick them on as it would printing more boxes if you had the artwork already. It doesn't make sense to order in a shipment from Kenner and wait for them to land and then have staff hand stick labels on them when you could have had another print run of the box done in half the time (and cost).

I think Palitoy were waiting on artwork from Kenner for the box, which didn't land in time, or even came with the first shipment of TT's - this was before we could send files via WeTransfer remember! - and Palitoy had to have the artwork for the box amended to add the logo (which wasn't exactly the 5 second job it is today) before they could produce their own version.

As I said, I don't know for sure and maybe we'll never know, but to me, logically, the stickered version would have been first.

Thanks again for your thoughts. As you say, perhaps we'll never know, but if I had to guess which one came first, I think I agree with you. Although I can see a scenario where it might have been the other way around, the stickered one coming first does make the most sense IMHO, especially with your hypothesis about the split-belly version's release shortening the production run of the now printed logo solid belly TT, and hence making that box the rarer of the two.

As for who was saying the stickered one was the later release, that would be no-one overtly ! However, I must admit I interpreted TK-7785's post (the second one of the thread) as implying that was the case... but that may well simply be me getting the wrong end of the stick.

No worries :)

It's all conjecture at this point. Maybe another question at a Palitoy talk! You never know, there might have been some almighty screw up at the time and some of the Palitoy guys might remember the story :D

OK, so having discussed which came out first, I thought it might be nice to actually see some pictures of what we're talking about! I've owned a stickered Palitoy logo Tauntaun for many years, but this thread has inspired me to track down a printed Palitoy logo version as well, and I am pleased to say that I can now present some (semi!) decent photos of both to highlight the differences.

First up, the stickered version, since we think this one probably came out first. Note how crookedly the stickers can be applied. The one on the front of mine is so out of true you can even glimpse part of the Kenner logo beneath it at the bottom left-hand corner! :) Also, note how the thickness of the sticker can be seen.

And second, the printed logo version. Note how the white edges of the logo can clearly be seen to be printed, and also how different the 'R' of the Registered trademark is on the printed version compared to that on the stickered one above:

Sorry for bad pictures, but my 2 versions seemto be printed logos. If had them to hand I could have checked to be sure, but is it my eyesight or is the one logo smaller than the other on the open belly version?

Lovely pair of tauntauns you have there. Thanks for sharing :)

In answer to your question, yes the open belly Palitoy Tauntaun box does indeed have a much smaller logo on it, with the box itself also being noticeably smaller than the solid belly box. As for the logos being printed, I believe there is only a stickered version of the solid belly Palitoy one. I am unaware of there being a stickered version of the open-belly Palitoy one, however if I am incorrect in that belief hopefully a more knowledgeable forum member will chip in, ideally with photos! :)
